I think Alexis Arguello's right hand hits Floyd and knocks him out in the mid rounds. Floyd would have a tough time with Alexis anytime. I think maybe Floyd could eek out a win at 140 if anything, but below that the right of Arguello finds a home.

Delahoya is top100, and if you have Morales for Pacquaio, he was arguably further past prime than DLH, Morales at 130 wasn't as good as a prime Corrales at 130, why didn't Morales come to 130 when Casamayor, Freitas and Corrales called him out?

Corrales/Castillo/Hatton all may come to rate top100. Like for like Judah is a modern Camacho. Hatton/Castillo perhaps a modern day equivilent of a Zivic/Lamotta/Nelson type. Corrales was a comparable 130lb Tito Trinidad pretty much and was possibly a more fearsome 130lber than Cervantes was a 140lber

You also have to bare in mind the best fighters avoided Mayweather, Mayweather wanted Hamed at a 128catchweight when Hamed was unbeaten, he wanted Mosley at 135 when Mosley was unbeaten, he wanted unifications with Hatton/Cotto in November 2005, he also wanted Mosley instead of Baldomir but Mosley was getting dental work/vacationing

Anyway top100 ATGs is completely subjective, what we know is Floyd fought 20title fights over 5divisions, fighting around 20 top10 ranked fighters, and fought 6 top10 P4P fighters from his era (either current/before/after) and around 12-15champions (either current/before/after). The fact is he took very little punches and won wide decisions or stoppages against the majority puts him up there with the best of all time.

I personally see Mayweather as one of the most overrated fighters in recent history. His resume is weak. To be an ATG you have to fight the best. Floyd didnt. No matter what gets said Floyd constantly used money as an excuse to avoid fighting a dangerous opponent. He symbolises everything that is wrong with boxing.

We will never know exactly how skilled he was because he did not fight the best.

The worst part of it is that some "fans" have bought into the hype Mayweather created and claim that he is an elite fighter. There is literally no evidence to suggest he is an elite fighter. I think Corrales is possibly his best win and I dont rate Corrales at all.

He is bad for boxing, and the sooner he is forgotten the better IMO

Floyd Mayweather Jr is an elite fighter. Why would anyone dispute this?

-I don't include Morales for Pacquiao though, it's the other way about. I was referring to Morales's win over Pacquiao. I could have included Pacquiao's wins over Barrera or Marquez though.

    - I don't see the relevance of your other points on Morales. What does that have to do with anything? This thread is not about Erik Morales or his very good resume.

    - Neither Corrales, Castillo or Hatton make a sensible top 100. Saying otherwise is wishful thinking. It's not happening. Your comparisons are ridiculous. LaMotta? Trinidad? Nope, because they will both make many top 100s.

    - Judah is a modern Camacho... except he's nowhere near as good a boxer and didn't achieve as much.

    - I do not have to bear in mind who avoided Floyd or who Floyd avoided when talking about proving his skills. If someone was scared of him, or he was scared of someone else, this is utterly irrelevant. We are talking about the fights he did have, the standard of the opposition he did fight, and how good he looked in those fights. This thread is not about his resume or his era. It's about his skills. Can someone be called one of the best fighters ever based on performances against Corrales and Hatton? I don't think he can.

    - Your points on his career achievements are also irrelevant. You've missed the point of the thread entirely.

Exactly! Some of his fans base his legacy on who they think he would beat. That's not how it works, or at least it's not how it should work. I've said it once and I'll say it again, a fighter's greatness is determined by who they managed to beat. Anybody can outpoint Carlos Baldomir, but what good wins Floyd does have (and there is some: Corrales, De La Hoya, Castillo), does not constitute to listing him among the likes of Leonard, Pep, Whitaker, and the list goes on.

i personally think Mayweather is in the top 10 defensces ever. i love his style of defence and it worked really well. Watch it against Hatton, Corrales, Castillo 2 its really good.

against the fighters he dosent do to well against he dosent fight with his defence as movement, and there above his weight above 140 hes crap IMO. im not making excuses though. Also i think you have over looked Victorinao Sosa he gave FMJ heaps of trouble with a jab at Light welter i believe.

All you can do is ask a guy to win and he has, at 130 i think he is in the top 10 is not top 5.

    thats my tuppence worth

    1. I thought you were referring to Pacs win over Morales, Pac has excellent wins but many more poor performances than FMJ, hence no right minded person rates him as high

    2. Actually pre-Barrera Morales resume is very weak, outside of Pacquaio and Barrera it is weak, no Hamed, Marquez, Mkkinney, Bungu, Harrison only moved to 130 after all the best fighters left the division

    3. Castillo has 1 of the most impressive LW resume's ever, Corrales destroyed the best 126/130lb/135lb fighters of his time, Hatton has wins over Tyszu, Castillo and been no1 at 140 for 4years

You claim Cervantes is a great win for Benitez but in terms of what he achieved he is probably below Hatton, Castillo, Corrales

    4. Both Judah and Camacho lost against the best they faced and both relied on speed and athleticism, I do question if Chavez got a past prime Camacho anyway though.

Judah gets quite underrated, hes had 16title fights, has quality wins over Spinks, Witter amongst others and has been P4P top10 and various times

5/6. Based on skills, a handful in history have the same combination of defense, speed, stamina, technique, skill, chin etc. Against Hatton and Corrales he dominated and stopped 2 unbeaten top5 P4P fighters without taking any real punnishment, both hardly landed anything of note. What more do you want?

Do you level the same accusations at SRR, his competition level is nowhere near the level of other top GOAT fighters and never faced the best men in the divisions he fought

I put to you that you simply don't like Mayweather's fighting style at 147 or above (as outside of Castillo he wasn't negative). He can be a defense first fighter when facing bigger men, this can seem to show lack of offensive talent. He also doesn't waste punches, or throw shots that can be countered, this too can look boring and seem to lack ability because he isn't windmilling. I also put to you that Mayweather won too easily in some fights hence making it look too easy.

The simple fact is in terms of percentages of shots thrown and landed Mayweather barely took any clean shots and nearly always landed clean effective blows. This in itself, hit and not being hit, is something FMJ does aswell as any fighter in history. Other fighters that can't boast this and need come from behind KO's simply don't have the same ability

Powerpuncher i respect most of your opinions but when it comes to Mayweather you have rose tinted glasses on and overrate him.

Im not critiscing you we all overrate some fighter, i overrate Hagler according to most people.

Do you really think Mayweather is in the top 10 or 15 at 147 i think Mayweather at 140 and above is rubbish compared to 130. However i do think talent wise and defence wise he is up their in the top 20s

Just look at it again and you will seee you overrate him abit too much.

except from that i respect your opinion most of the time

Mayweather would not be top 30-40 at 147. Period. The guy didn't do anything significant at that weight.

Boxing skills: tools specific to the sport of boxing which, when learned, are then deployed in the ring by a boxer's physical and mental abilities.

In other words, when judging Mayweather purely in terms of his skill, he doesn't score very highly.

Joe Frazier has more boxing skill than Floyd Mayweather, in my opinion, though it is close.

In terms of what he has to deploy them (Speed, reactions, learned-generalship etc.) I would again suggest that Frazier proved himself the better of the two, although I suspect, based upon what I have seen on film, that Mayweather may have had the better raw goods - just.

    :bart I disagree.

I think we can all get a bit anal when it comes to discussing what really is "Boxing skill". I think at the crux of it, it's the ability to hit and not get hit. Frazier is not comparable with a Mayweather, who is more comparable with a Sweet Pea when it comes to being effective, both offensively and defensively.
