Greb liked a good time but he didnt drink to excess his vice was women,Harry often fought,every week ,he didnt get chance to get out of shape.

Yeh he'd send his trainer over to girls in the crowd during the fight to pick them up on his behalf.

Loved to gamble too, betting as much as his entire purse on himself - Used to trick sportswriters into betting against him (to increase the odds in his favour) by pretending to be drunk at a bar the night before a fight.

Hated training, preferred to just fight often.

Yes. In fact, there are no reports before 1922 that I know of that say a word about his being either a drunkard and a hedonist. He couldn't possibly have been so effective and so busy had he not been what he was -a student of the game who trained hard by fighting often.

Before fighting Johnny Wilson for the MW title in 1923, Greb was seen in bars drinking colored water and acting drunk -the bartenders were confederates. Wilson, who Greb accused of only being champ because he avoided him, got wind of it and salivated at the mouth -and lost his title.

He would often drink apple juice and have people think it was beer -even going so far as to have two flappers pretend to hold him up. This was after he was widowed, by the way. As you say, he would then bet a load on himself to win the upcoming match.

Fact is, Greb imbibed wine from his dad's distillery once in a while -he was not a big drinker. Interestingly, he was also a devout Catholic who donated thousands to churches around Pittsburgh.

While we're on the subject of Greb, he trained particularly hard for Mickey Walker and it showed in that victory. The so-called street fight later was pure fiction. Mickey was Irish and the Irish have always been great story-tellers. The fact is that Mickey Walker went to Polyclinic hospital to get stitched up and then was with his wife in the hotel room with ice packs on his face.

 

Weird, Walker stuck with that story to the day he died.

 

Wouldn't you if you could overshadow a fact that hurts you with a fiction that helps you -and had the press giving it a boost?

 

i love how we have deducted that he isnt an alcoholic....but find him a terrible womaniser instead...MUCH better

 

I agree, just talking about a piece I read regarding him and that incident.

 

Peter Heller's "In This Corner" has a whole chapter on Walker and he goes on and on about it. It reads like a tall tale, check it out if you have that book (and if you don't, you should)!
