Burley twice, Walcott twice, Joe Louis, Joey Maxim twice, Archie Moore, Jimmy Bivins, Lloyd Marshal, Teddy Yarosz, Rex Layne, Bob Satterfield..

He's arguably one of the top 3 best boxers of the 40's, easy shoe-in for a top 20-30 ATG spot.

unfortunately "jones jr knocked out" is only so useful as a google image search, so that only takes us so far.

As for the footage, most of RJJ's highlight reels are of him taking out his own samples of firefighters and sanitation workers, you know absolutey nothing about the fighter in that video anyway

Who did he beat that was clearly better than James Toney or Bernard Hopkins? They both fought their share of cab drivers and HOFers

I'd have to say Joe Louis and Archie Moore are at least comparible

Don't. They are infinitely better. The arguable #1-2 HW of all time and probably the #4-5 LHW of all time.

Today's athletes are bigger, faster and stronger in every sport but somehow not boxing? I like the way boxing fans have loyalty and a sense of history and much respect for that but to say that anyone is infinitely better than Toney or BHop is ridiculous.

Yeah, LHW supremacy would come down to a match between Foster and Charles, and while Foster had the power to spark Charles, I would say Charles would get to Foster first with his, with his superior speed, and technique.
    Prime for prime btw

Come on now, nobody can talk about fighting bums when it comes to the old-school boxers.

Some ATG fighters like 2-1 AJ Smith who Charles fought when he was 27. He fought 18-17 Clarence Jones after who was on a five-fight losing streak. The year before he fought 8-19-3 Al Sheridan and future HOFer Adolph Barlow in his first and only fight.

    sigh.

They have better resumes than Toney or BHop. This isn't about athleticism. These guys have more fights under their belt, GOAT technique and were incredible punchers(moore/louis). I actually like both Toney and BHop but please don't sell them short with an argument about superior nutrition or something similar. Boxing is a martial art. It's not about your 40 time and how much weight you can lift. It's about how often you fight, how often you spar, and against who, and in that regard Charles, Moore, and Louis are better.

They fought bums, but they also fought the best. Getting title shots was hard as **** so you had to beat a lot of ass.

Roy Jones only fought one person ever coming off a loss for a title. Charles fought at least four for a title that I've quickly counted. Acutally, since 1994 Jones has only fought 3 people directly coming off a loss which were Trinidad, Tarver and Hill, and only one was for a title. You can't even count that one actually because it was a rematch of Jones-Tarver I. Charles fought like
    eighty mother****ers coming off losses.

If Roy was fighting in an era where you had to fight 10-15 times a year...often against cans but just as often against ranked contenders...he would have been fighting plenty of guys coming off losses.

And you could bet your bottom dollar he would have a few aswell :good
