won the first Martinez/Williams fight? I only ask that because both fights were similiar because one guy Martinez(like Hopkins)who was the counter puncher and was landing the cleaner blows but the other guy Paul Williams(like Calzaghe) was throwing more and landed more total punches and was the aggressor(like Calzaghe was). I thought Martinez won this fight(same as I thought Hopkins won with Calzaghe) because he landed the more cleaner effective punches but wouldn't have a problem with anyone who thought it was draw, the same as I wouldn't have a problem with anyone who called the Calzaghe/Hopkins fight a draw. I thought both fights were very similiar if you compare the way the fight was fought between the combatants. And decision was also controversial at the end in both fights?

And BTW, majority of people in this forum thought Calzaghe won the fight with Hopkins when a poll was done, so based on this poll, it'll tell me who everyone in this forum really thought won this fight.

I'm no Calzaghe fan by any means but I thought he won, and I can't believe some people defend Hopkins after "fighting" that way.

Well if your talking about when Hopkins was clinching Cazlaghe, that's ring smarts and throwback old school boxing right there, and it's no different than what Evander Holyfield did with Tyson when he was smothering Tyson punches and Clinching him all the time or how Sandy Saddler or Duran used to fight. Bernard fought Calzaghe smart and it would of been dumb for him to try and go punch for punch with him or outwork him because than he would of been fighting his fight.

Lol did you watch the fight?

Calzaghe did more infighting than hopkins and nullified his inside work better than any Hopkins opponent before.

I believe the poster was referring to the cries of low blows.

I had Williams by about 2 points, and Calzaghe with the same margin over Bernard.

    Joe won.

I don't see these fights as similar either.

One of the biggest BHop fans around. Also, THE biggest PW fan.

Paul definitely won the first Martinez fight, although not by as much as one judge had it. I also felt like Joe barely nipped BHop on the cards.

And as SJS stated... These fights were not similar by any means.

You mean Hopkins nullified his punchoutput by roughing him up on the inside and using good lateral movement. Only thing Calzaghe did was land slaps on the inside and most hitting Hopkins arms. And if you constantly throwing punches like Calzaghe does or a Paul Williams your always gonna land more total punches even if your getting outboxed. Volume punchers like that are relying on touching you more, opposed to being accurate with punches. As for the Low blows, i'm not getting into that debate because that's not relevant to who you thought won more rounds whether you thought Bernard or Joe won in their fight. But lets stick to the topic and the title of thread.

I'd have to disagree. It was 2 volume punchers vs. counter punchers, the only thing different was the amount of clinching Hopkins was doing but Calzaghe is a better boxer, with better footwork than Paul Williams is,(which makes him harder to time) even though there both volume punchers, so it would of been impossible for Hopkins to just counter punch and used the ring like he did to count down on his punchoutput, he had to smother him too, to set up his counters.

This type of correlation doesn't work at all.

I had Calzaghe beating Hops and a Draw for Martinez/Williams I.

Williams. One of the only times Sergio looked a little winded, the guy usually has energy for days but he was going life n' death in there against Paul. Williams looked ready to go a few more rounds.

Hopkins lost it by waiting till he was too old to go high output over 12 rounds. Or he shoudl have opted for a 10 round fight if he could.

5 rounds, he won, outboxed Calzaghe and poleaxed him. next 7 rounds he folded, gassed and unable to keep up with Joes high output pitterpatter. Calzaghe deserved to scrape a win.#

Obviously fit Hopkins had the ability to beat Joe, but at 42 the mind was willing but the flesh wanting.

Will now watch teh Sergie fight and add more later.
