All things considered has Floyd Mayweather benefitted from the Money May Persona

I remember when there was a time Floyd Mayweather was simply referred to pretty boy Floyd and he was loved by the purists of the sport who took time to appreciate his remarkable ability.

Then as time went on presumably as a result of his relationship with Top Rank he developed this persona of Money Mayweather. Now back in 2004-2005 Floyd Mayweather was nowhere near the biggest draw in boxing. In fact if he claimed it back then he would have been laughed at. His style isn't crowd pleasing and despite winning I don't think the boxing public would have went out of their way to watch this guy.

After his big fight with De la Hoya which was preceded by HBO's ingenious marketing tool of 24/7 the Money Mayweather persona was out on display for a wide audience. After the fight, he went on for a round 2 with Ricky Hatton and so forth. During the process he enabled himself to collect his biggest paydays and has generated significant hype for himself and the sport as a fight with Mosley and Pacquiao (should it happen) will attest to that.

Now if he remained humble, personable and charming and conducted himself sort of like a Klitschko or a Jermain Taylor would these fights carry the same hype? Would he still be as popular as he is now?

And a side note, is it good for boxing?

I could think of a "thing" or two that would defile me if it were to enter into my mouth.

I still dont believe he is as big of a draw as he claims. DLH was the reason for that big paperview buy as well as marquez so right now he ridin his way up there. Like if he fought Clottey he wouldnt have made the same as pacman against him. N this fight commin up alot of people like shane n would love to c floyd get shut up.

We need Floyd in boxing ..this is what its about ..thats why we loved the man ALI ..now Floyd may say he's the greatest of all times ...but as much as I love Floyd as a fighter ...he's does and has to remember ...who that tiltle was giving to FIRST....& nothing can take that away from ALI....Nothing...also if it wasn't for Ali ...Boxers wouldn't be making the kind of money there making now.

I want to believe you. Now, I just need you to find one instance for me where DLH and Marquez generated more PPV buys fighting someone else.

Love him or hate him, he has benefited from the Money Mayweather "Bad Guy" persona. We're all here talking about him, which is what he wants. It doesn't matter if you buy the fight to see him win, or buy it to see him lose; either way, he gets paid.

Of course Floyd Mayweather Jr. has benefitted from his "Money" persona. He went from making like $2-$3 million to now he is bringing in like $30-$40 million.

Its benefited him financially, but that's about it. Its made him hated and despised.

His fans can say that he doesnt care all they want, but I remember an exact quote from him following his win over Hatton. He stated..."I would give anything to have the love and following that Hatton gets from his fans"

Oscar wasn't that great on PPV before he fought Trinidad.

DLH was averagubg 420,000 buys on PPV before he fought Trinidad.

Everyone needs that fight that helps them push into big time mainstream.

It's quite simple. In boxing PPV needs a strong A and a good B at least to do good.

Only heavyweight fights can do good without a decent B side of the fight.

Tyson is the king of PPV, DLH isn't even close.

I don't think his popularity has benefited. His wallet has though. At the end of the day a lot people tune into, or buy his fights in order to see him get beat down. The reason? The cocky, loud mouth persona he has created for himself.

I seem to remember a few years back Bob Arum saying he simply couldn't get Mayweather on HBO. He didn't have an exciting style and no one wanted to watch him.
