In all honesty the way the thread title was written, it made it seem like Pavlik "won't" carry his power up with him that's why I put Disagree.. no doubt, Pavlik will carry his power with him to SMW.
I knew that. I should have written a little more. I just used your reply to hook to since it was 'friendly'. Originally I had assumed he used some kind of drastic weight cutting measures since he is 10+ pounds heavier on fight night. But, we get 'weight reports' that show him doing it the hard way. For the last five he don's his 'fat suit' to sweat it. I started doing research and found that after the fat is gone, muscle is next. So, he could actually be losing a little muscle to make weight. I have problems with the FIRST 5 pounds, let alone the LAST.
This is absolutely true. However, some of those fights were at odd weights like 164, et. EVERY fight at SMW or above ended in a brutal KO unless you include the second Taylor fight which was actually below SMW. There are many, many people who are quick to question, or criticize Pavlik, who don't know jack **** about his career.
That's exactly the case, and that's also why guys moving down in weight and winning at a championship level is actually less common than fighters moving up and doing it. What excessive draining also does is reduce your ability to take a punch because there's actually less fluid to cushion your brain from the force of the blows. Even rehydrating doesn't necessarily get it back to where it'd be had you not drained at all because there's not enough time for that to happen in between the weigh in and the fight. Combine that with muscle weakness from draining too much, and you get a perfect example of why Chris Byrd doesn't get stopped by Povetkin at HW, but gets destroyed against a fringe contender at LHW.
I think he will be fine at making 168 in good shape, with good power, though imo he would want to build some muscle if he was to move to 175 as most of his trouble making 160 are more to do with being so damn tall than being a big build. Though i definitely think he could do it as long as he planned ahead well.
So as not to completely go off topic with the thread, there's no question Kelly will carry his power to 168. I'd wager it'll actually improve as his frame's got the room to carry without getting weakened by the weight drain process. He should see improvements in speed and explosiveness, as well.
Well yeah, but basically most of those opponents were subpar fighters with very bad records. In other words they were bums that Kelly was able to deal with and KO very easily. Taking out those soft touches at spuer middle doesn't necessarily mean he carries his power well to 168. Every one of Kelly's most significant fights against formidable opponents took place at middleweight; Zuniga, Taylor, Miranda, Zertuche, McKart were among his best opposition that all took place at middleweight.
Kelly's power is based on leverage, whom ever he's punching down on is going to take a beating, whom ever he's punching straight towards is going to handle it better. Pretty simple. So as long as he maintains leaverage he should maintain power, maybe he'll lose a little but he's blows will still stay with his opponents. I look at his career path as being potentially similar to Erik Morales' (a 5'8 72 inch reach super Bantamweight). The biggest thing he'll have to do as he moves up is adapt his fighting style to adjust to what bigger guys are doing to him. What he's doing to them will stay more or less pretty effective. Erik didn't really have to adjust but thats because there's only one Erik morales.
****ing brilliant:happy This is the last piece to the weight draining puzzle that I've been looking for. Thanks:good
Kelly will most likely have a lot of power at SMW, but he won't have enough Boxing skills to suceed against "the man" at SMW.
I've read a few posts here that when Kelly Pavlik enters the Top Rank Gym every fighter from 160-200lbs doesn't want to step in the ring with him. Heard he is even more impressive at his walk around weight of 170-180lbs.
