Severe underarchievers: (Maybe) Sonny Liston Riddick Bowe Vitali Slight underachievers: Tyson Young Foreman Overachievers: Ali Old Foreman Worth mentioning: Ken Norton (underachiever), Rocky (overachiever)
I wouldn't consider him so, but he may have been had he possessed the necessary discipline. H.E. is a great poster but I find the thread somewhat contradictory. How can you be an ATG and also be underachieving? Perhaps I would have entitled it," Underachievers Who Could Have Been ATG's?" That of course would have given us an entirely different set of names
How did he underachieve? I thought he accomplished plenty, good runs and a nice resume considering the era and weight he fought in. Was he a partier or lazy in training or something?
Major partier apparently, lots of women. Retired at 25 which was when he should have because he was already possibly starting to slip a bit. Then he married a woman who either (depending what you believe) 1) divorced him and got half his money or 2) left him and stole ALL of his money or 3) invested all of his money in a restaurant business that went bad immediately. He was forced un-retire just a year later for financial reasons and went 2-3 (all losses to champions though), and then apparently ended up with financial issues again somehow, but fortunately found work in boxing behind the scenes so he didn't end up totally broken down. His reign as JFlyW champion is one of the most impressive ever at the lighter weights, but somehow it just seems like he could have done more (such as become a two weight class champion or win the comeback fights, all of which he probably should have won without much trouble had he not faded so much by that point).
I wouldn't be mad Mc .. the only ones that annoy me are when they get personally obnoxious .. let me flush to out .. some guys over achieved and others did not .. I don't think anyone can say a Mrciano or a Holyfield or a Frazier did not give it their all for the overwhelming most part of the careers .. it is well documented that Ali in the second half of his career clearly did not and it resulted in performances like the loss to Norton, the Jimmy Young fight, ect that tarnished him to some degree. That's how I see it .. I know fighters are the sum of their parts but some got by more on talent than others ..
Mandos Ramos is definitely someone who could have achieved more with more focus, better training and conditioning, no substance abuse, so on and so forth. He's easily Hall of Fame even with his entire career being a worst case scenario in terms of his personal life and problems.
Russell, I tell ya, there's just been too much salt mines and not enough "free time" lately....and that's gonna change!
