;ll try it, i dont like doing p4p all-time lists, this is something im doing purely right now. 1. Robinson 2. Ali 3. Duran 4. Greb 5. Pep 6. Charles 7. Sam Langford 8. Pernell Whitaker 9. Eder Jofre 10. Joe Gans From 7 downwards i just added some personal faves really. I know i have Langford quite low McGrain, but if you look who's above him, i really have that top 7 very very tight. With some revision, i would probably move him up anyways.
1.) Sugar Ray Robinson 2.) Henry Armstrong 3.) Harry Greb 4.) Sam Langford 5.) Ezzard Charles 6.) Willie Pep 7.) Roberto Duran 8.) Benny Leonard 9.) Mickey Walker 10.) Pernell Whitaker
You see, i missed out Henry Armstrong!!!!!!!!! These quick lists without thinking can destroy a man's reputation!! Kidding, he should be in there!
I'm not too keen on p4p lists either. Mine is based on the 1999 Ring Magazine poll (with some modifications) which I was a participant. And this isn't some half hearted list in which names were randomly pulled out of the air. Not in order Hagler Roy Jones Greb Willie Pep Ezzard Charles Langford Robinson The Great B.L. Gans Wilde
Sam Langford Harry Greb Ray Robinson Henry Armstrong Benny Leonard Roberto Duran Ezzard Charles Muhammad Ali Archie Moore Joe Louis
1. Sugar Ray Robinson 2. Henry Armstrong 3. Harry Greb 4. Benny Leonard 5. Willie Pep 6. Joe Gans 7. Muhammad Ali 8. Ezzard Charles 9. Roberto Duran 10. Sugar Ray Leonard
I know its not a popular choice Russel, ut it's something i have learned to come to grips with, i'm no Ali fan, but in my honest opinion i think its really justifiable to have him there. I held out of ranking him high for years, but for me, he's definitely in that vicinity at least.
There is a lot of film footage of Ali beating other all time great fighters, and in Foreman, one who is at his absolute peak. That is where your argument would begin, Teeto. For me, it can't be justified, but opinions are like arse-holes, after all.
Yea, i respect your opinion McGrain. I would start by saying that for me, in a h2h sense, during his first reign, he would be one of the finest ever, and i mean that, forget about technical deficiencies, and look at effectiveness, truly amazing considering the opposition. Then i would see that he was that he emerged as the best of two great eras, the first of which he was clearly the best force at the weight, the next he still emerged as the best (even with the dubious decisions) when past his prime, and that may be the golden era in the heavyweight division's great history. I'm really sounding like an Ali fan here, but im really not, although i may have come round a bit in recent times!
Like you say, he's the best h2h in his divisions history, and if a guy is as clearly the #1 choice for his weight division as I feel Ali is then he has a case for the top 10. I have him at #11 personally.
