There's no correct answer here, and besides it's just too bloody hard! Ali, Leonard, Robinson, Marciano & Armstrong are all pretty much pick themselves, in my humble opinion. There are about 30 (maybe more) correct answers for the next five. Perhaps my next three would be Louis, Duran and Jones Jnr.
1 Robinson 2 Armstrong 3 Greb 4 Duran 5 Pep 6 Langford 7 Charles 8 Jofre 9 Whitaker 10 Walker DR Greenthumb
SRR Henry Armstrong Roberto Duran Ezzard Charles Willie Pep Julio Cesar Chavez Benny Leonard Sam Langford Muhammad Ali Archie Moore
really strong contendors for the top 10 are: hagler, hearns, whitaker, arguello, olivares, jones jnr, holmes, joe louis, wilfredo gomez, jofre, grebb, walker
Top Tier Sam Langford Sugar Ray Robinson Harry Greb Henry Armstrong In my opinion these guys should form any top 4 in any given order. I do not think a placing lower than 6 can justified for any of these men 2nd Tier Ezzard Charles Willie Pep Mickey Waler Archie Moore You can justify these guys being in the mix with the top tier. I don't like to see any of these guys rated outside of a 12. 3rd Tier Bob Fitzsimmons Muhammad Ali Benny Leonard Barney Ross Sugar Ray Leonard Men who can justafiably appear in any 10 but shuldn't be above any of the first tier. I don't like to see any of these guys outside of a 15. Others Charley Burley Joe Louis Joe Gans Pernell Whitaker Jimmy Wilde Barbados Joe Walcott Gene Tunney Roy Jones Jimmy Wilde Tony Canzoneri Sandy Saddler Carlos Monzon Men who should be firmly attatched to a top 25 who may appear at the fringes of the 10 based upon criteria or, possibly, a deeper understanding of a given fighter.
Something like ... 1. Henry Armstrong 2. Sugar Ray Robinson 3. Harry Greb 4. Ezzard Charles 5. Sam Langford 6. Mickey Walker 7. Barney Ross 8. Joe Louis 9. Sugar Ray Leonard 10. Muhammad Ali 11. Pernell Whitaker 12. Benny Leonard 13. Roberto Duran 14. Willie Pep 15. Bob Fitzsimmons 16. Barbados Joe Walcott 17. Archie Moore 18. Gene Tunney 19. Joe Gans 20. Roy Jones Jr On the fringes: Gavilan, Arguello, Griffith, Hagler and Burley.
Generally nice criteria, McGrain. Charles belong in the 1st Tier 1, though IMO. Ross and SRL in the 2nd.
