I got to disagree, RJJ was just a freak of nature. But his actual "boxing" technique is nothing I would teach someone
but coach merk and his father have something to do with it, any other trainer would have tried getting him to be conventional its similar to what nazim richardson said about enzo calzaghe, he said any other trainer would have tried to get joe to turn over his punches but then we wouldn't have joe calzaghe would we?
True, but could we have possibly seen a better fighter? You don't necessarily need to box by the book, but something as simple as keeping your hands up could go a long way. Look at Jones now, getting knocked out with people who have no business sharing the ring with him
Ricardo Lopez and Nacho Beristain. Nacho likes to try and develop textbook-perfect fighters and Lopez was the perfect student for him.
Jones would have never been as successful as a textbook fighter. Hell, Ali would have never been as successful fighter. Every fighter has his own style and it is the trainers job to refine it as he progresses. Fundamentals are very important, Jones was taught them and it showed in the AMs. He wasnt born with boxing ability, he was born with athletic ability. As he gained more experience in boxing, he came into his own...with the help of Merk.
yup just like naseem hamed i was worried when they recruited manny steward, but steward knew not to mess with whats working and instead improve on the way he fights.
taver + mcgirt = still getting beaten by ****ed up Roy Jones(he looked awful in that fight not because of anything taver done but because of the muscle loss.) Jones shouldnt be fighting any more its not his lack of defence thats stopping him its the fact he should have retired after getting destroyed by glengoffe johnson
that was the first fight, what about the rematch when jones had the time to adjust back to his weight?
