Nice topic for discussion. Gonna quickly throw down my predictions before I head off. Don't have too much time to put down my reasoning for all of them. Muhammad Ali -vs- This content is protected Winner: Lennox Lewis Ezzard Charles -vs- This content is protected Winner: Sam Langford Bernard Hopkins -vs- This content is protected Winner: Carlos Monzon I'm a huge fan of Hopkins, but I think that in this case he would come out on the losing end. This content is protected -vs- Jose Napoles Winner: Ray Robinson I know a lot of people would go for SRR immediately..but I'm of the opinion that Napoles winning wouldn't be that hard to believe. But still, I have to go with Robinson on this one. This content is protected -vs- Roberto Duran Winner: Pernell Whitaker This content is protected -vs- Manny Pacquiao Winner: Willie Pep Too much movement, and while Pacquiao impressed against Diaz, I think Pep would box circles around him for the majority of the fight. Orlando Canizales -vs- This content is protected Winner: Eder Jofre Midget Wolgast -vs- This content is protected Winner: Jimmy Wilde Wolgast winning isn't impossible. But I think Wilde was superior overall. U.S. - 3 Rest of World - 5
What's with all the whitaker over duran predictions? like i said, Pernell's my #8 all-time, and he may be my favorite fighter ever, but in a 15 round fight at 135lbs, i don't see him, or anyone beating duran. Duran-Leonard 2 is a bad comparison. For one, it was at 147lbs, duran was just starting to fade, and i'm not making excuses, but that Duran was not the Duran of the 1st fight or lightweight Duran. It's a close decision, but i see Duran taking maybe a round or two more (probably the last 2-3 rounds would be Duran's) and also dropping Pernell at some point in the fight. head-to-head Duran's my #1 lightweight & Pernell's my #2, so i don't think it's that much of a stretch to say pernell wins, i just don't see it.
Muhammad Ali vs Lennox Lewis - Lewis clear UD ( I think Ali would be outjabbed, Lewis would be able to time the right hand similiar to how Folley did) Ezzard Charles vs Sam Langford - Charles UD Carlos Monzon vs Bernard Hopkins - Monzon UD Ray Robinson vs Jose Napoles - Robinson UD (cut stoppage posible) Pernell Whitaker vs Roberto Duran -Whitaker close UD (Duran is one of my favourite fighters but Whitaker is all wrong for him) Manny Pacquiao vs Willie Pep - Pep dominating UD Eder Jofre vsOrlando Canizales - Jofre clear UD Cant comment on Wilfe - Wolgast, I haven't seen enough of either fighter to make a confident prediction.
Jesus, that's about the worst thread hijacking I've ever seen. He meant what he said. It was his opinion, and apparently others obliged and gave their opinion. If you want to start your own thread about USA vs. The World, the last 15 years, I'm sure you can, and it will probably be pretty popular. But, take it easy, Sparky.
HW - Lewis UD LHW- Charles UD MW- i think should have been hagler vs. monzon but anyway MONZON UD against hopkins WW-SRR UD LW-Duran UD FW-there are other match ups better than pac, but i think pac wins this one close UD cant comment on anyone lower, didn't see how they fight
The dream HW matchup that never materialized, one that can be discussed reasonably is Ali vs. Teofilo Stevenson.
This content is protected I think this would be a very close fight, Ali's speed and ring craft would give him a very good chance and he would cause Lewis problems, he also had a granite chin so a TKO/KO victory for Lewis can be ruled out. However, I think Lewis would be able to dictate this fight with his jab, and his height and reach advantages. Ali didn't have a sufficent enough body attack, nor did he have great power so I don't think he can really hurt Lewis here, who has a better chin than people give him credit for. Lewis by close UD. This content is protected A huge fight between a man I would definately rank somewhere in top 10 p4p of all time against the man I would actually rate at #1. Light-heavy was supposed to be Langford's best weight class, he was amazing powerful for a man of his physical stature, had quick hands, a granite chin and often under-rated boxing skills. However, he could be outboxed, and Charles is a man that could do everything. He uses his superior skills on the inside to land and counter and keeps Langford of him, Charles earns a comfortable UD win. This content is protected Another good fight, Hopkins a very intelligent fighter, good all-round with an iron jaw, Monzon won't be able to KO him. Carlos wasn't particularly quick but he's a good boxer, however, his frame and reach advantage disappears here because Hopkins is a big middle who is a couple of inches taller and has just an inch less reach advantage. I find it hard to pick against Monzon at MW, on this occasion I think Hopkins would spoil and tie him up and fight an intelligent fight, I think it would be extremely close fight but I would still go with Monzon by SD. This content is protected Another good fight, Robinson was a fighter who really could do absolutely anything, a superb boxer who could bang and was very durable aswell, a top 3 ATG in pretty much anyones book. Napoles though had a very smooth style that revolved around his great boxing ability. He could hit hard aswell and control the ring. This would make for a close fight but Sugar Ray Robinson would begin to take control in the latter stages in my opinion, Napoles could be stopped and I fancy SRR to take this by late TKO. This content is protected Sweet Pea, a superbly gifted boxer, great ability and in my opinion the best defence of all-time, even above that of Willie Pep. His fantastic reflexes and amazing ability to read his opponents punches ment he was notoriously hard to hit flush. Duran however was an offensive artist, great punching power, quick and could throw a lot of shots and pretty much any shot, he was crude and I believe that he would eventually muscle up on Whitaker and the ref would end up stepping in, Sweet Pea would be well ahead on the cards but Duran comes back to win by late TKO. This content is protected As good as Pacman has been in the modern era, and as good as he is offensively, I can't see him winning this fight. Great power and speed and a very exciting fighter to watch, his skillset has also really improved lately, he's much technically rounded and now no longer one-dimensional. Pep however was like Whitaker notoriously hard to hit flush, with Pacman's speed and power this could end up like the Saddler fights, however I believe Pep would take control and win by UD. This content is protected Canizales was a very good fighter, good skills, quick hands and a good chin. However, Jofre is arguably the best bantamweight of all-time and had it all. He had power in both hands, great technical ability aswell. His reflexes and bobbing-weaving style would make it hard for Canizales to hit him flush, and Jofre also had a good chin. I believe he would take Canizales speed and energy away with an effective body attack and then move upstairs and stop him. Jofre by TKO in mid-to-late rounds. This content is protected My knowledge of Wolgast is a bit slim, but from what I know he was an extremely quick and tough little fighter, but had little power and was a bit clumsy. I believe he would take control of the early stages of the fight with his speed, but Wilde had the power to KO anybody at flyweight and a lot of guys above flyweight aswell, I think he would eventually catch Wolgast around the mid-rounds and then it's lights out. Wilde by KO. This content is protected USA 3 Rest Of The World 5
On other day though Ali could beat Lewis, Sweet Pea could beat Duran, Langford could beat Charles, Napoles could beat SRR and Hopkins could beat Monzon. They really are very close fights. If each of those was a trilogy they would all be split I'm sure.
USA V THE REST OF THE WORLD, ALL TIME TOURNAMENT HEAVYWEIGHT:.......... Lennox Lewis (UK) LIGHT-HEAVYWEIGHT:.Ezzard Charles MIDDLEWEIGHT:..........Carlos Monzon (Argentina) WELTERWEIGHT:.........Ray Robinson (Cuba) LIGHTWEIGHT:............Pernell Whitaker FEATHERWEIGHT:........Willie Pep BANTAMWEIGHT:.........v Eder Jofre (Brazil) FLYWEIGHT:...............v Jimmy Wilde (UK) So who wins this tournament? Who wins each fight? Make eight picks or one pick as you prefer.
Handsome post!!! Wilde is better overall, and should always be higher on all time lists. But Wolgast was absolutley lethal during his absolute and short peak - he was also the fasterst fighter from the post Wilde era. Compounded with his unpredictability and iron chin, I think he should be made a favourite to outpoint Wilde.
Lewis UD Charles UD Monzon UD Robinson TKO Whitaker UD Pep UD (Why Pacquiao?) Jofre UD Wilde TKO I got it 4-4
I got it 4-4 too, but we differ on Whitaker, Charles, Lewis and Wilde...Jesus! Anyway, Pac, because he's a great, great fighter, did wonderful work at the weight, is probably ranked higher on my ATG list than any other Feather from the ROTW. You think he doesn't belong in this class?
