I don't know if both need a fight like this...both need to win a fight like this. The loser is pretty much permanently out of contention.
Green is shot and Miranda never learned his trade. It is kind of a meaningless fight, but it might get the winner a shot at a title.
Miranda gets taken out this time. They don't belong in the same class. Miranda= lower B level Green= Borderline A level
If I was Miranda I'd be lobbying for the fight Taylor doesn't want with Froch. I think it would be good match up for him. I'm sure Froch wants a bigger name for the payday, but that doesn't appear likely at the moment. Froch could always say he is taking on a guy that he can relate to because Taylor and Kessler are ducking both of them.
Based on my observation, Green has the skillset of an elite fighter. His boxing ability, punching power, sense of timing, killer instinct, combined with his sneaky left hook makes him very dangerous. He's been through promotional issues and health issues but now that's all behind him, all he has to do is live up to his potential. A healthy/focused Green can beat anyone at 168. Bute is certainly no better than him I know that.
Ah, see therein lies the rub for me. I've always though he's got the athleticism and potential but not the mentality to thrive at the top level. The health is sort of out of his hands and can't really be blamed on him; the focus is just a fatal character flaw. He hasn't demonstrated any significant change in mentality by now (he really ought to have stopped Williams), so I don't see it happening.
What character flaw are you speaking of? The Mcrary fight was a hickup but he finished the job at the end and proved that he can come back from adversity. If anything, Green proved that he had a heart. And when he fought williams, he was still not at 100% health wise so how can you blame him for not scoring a KO? Sounds like you're just not a fan of him and you want to find every little reason to criticize the guy. IMO I think he wanted to get some rounds in against someone like Williams. Do you blame Cotto for not knocking out Lovemore N dou? From my memory, Ndou had him on his bike in the championship rounds.
Miranda would need to actually beat someone that will get him ranked by the WBC for that to happen...
Don't hate the guy at all, just never been terribly impressed. A lot of the buzz surrounding him sprung up from the Codrington fight, for what that's worth. I do agree that he shows flashes of potential, but honestly as a touted puncher, even coming back less than 100% healthy, he was cleared to fight, he'd been in training, Rubin was/is now a sitting duck tomato can (whereas N'Dou is not...bad comparison)...it's really not unfair to have expected a stoppage.
WBC was willing enough to have Taylor fight for the title his first real bout at 168, no? Fighting your way into contention has become a bad joke in boxing.
