Any thoughts on this fight? He's the youngest guy Alvarez has fought in his last four fights. Sans Matthew Hatton, who doesn't really count Rhodes was 34 N'Dou was almost 40 Baldomir was almost 40 Not saying Gomez has much of a change, but Gomez is definitely "fresher" then anyone he's fought since... uhhh... it's been a while. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- People say he's a blown up welter, but Cotto's younger brother was a blown up ****in' lightweight and the only even remotely fresh guy Alvarez has fought in years. So, thoughts?
I think this is gonna be a true war!! and with Lucas withdrawing from the Morales fight, this might be the most exciting fight on the card. Gomez knows this is his last shot in primetime and for a title so I think he brings it to Canelo. I also think Gomez has gotten better over the years. Better Gomez Canelo is fighting then the one Cotto fought if you ask me. 8 round slugfest with blood from both boxers and Canelo with a savage KO of Gomez!
Gomez has improved noticeably since the Cotto fight, I think he will lose to Alvarez but Gomez could be more competitive than some fans are expecting, even though Calvin Green is a gatekeeper,Gomez did look improved in this fight by getting the 2nd round TKO win...... Fight starts at the 6:25 mark..... [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sfmiATEQ6Xo[/ame]
My thoughts are basically this..... the fight will be a replay of Cotto - Gomez only in this fight poor Alfonso will meet a worse fait because Alvarez isn't Cotto, who was an established champ who backed off when he had the advantage. Nooo, Alvarez is a young fighter with something to prove, so when he gets Gomez in trouble he's goingto go for the kill which will result in the worst beating Alfonso has ever taken in his career. Total mismatch.
It's a damn shame that there isn't much buzz about this fight. This will be a good scrap and Gomez has become a much better fighter since the "Contender" days... A show in which i was a huge fan by the way.
Top. I think Gomez is going to lose this fight on cuts. Alvarez isn't a one shot KO artist, beats you on accumulation 90% of the time. Gomez has paper mache skin, he's cut in every fight he's been in over the course of the past few years :think Probably going to be a bloodbath.
Gomez is underrated in terms of his boxing skill, toughness, and willingness to throw a lot of punches. Canelo really hasn't fought anyone with the tools and will Gomez has, the question is mostly just if Gomez is too small for him. I'm taking the upset and picking Gomez by decision, think he'll get off to a fast start and Canelo will come on late but won't do enough to pull it out. Regardless I think the fight will be competitive.
For the most part, Alfonso has sustained cuts in fights due to headbutts, not punches. Cotto hit him with the kitchen sink and was unable to cut Alfonso(though he did cause pretty good swelling). The Buendia and Soto-Karass had a lot of headbutts, and Gomez got cuts, he wasn't cut against Castillo or the most recent fight against Calvin Green. And I think Gomez is for the most part going to try and outbox Canelo, and headbutts won't be a big factor but we'll see. Regardless, I've said it before, but a lot of people judge Gomez based on the Cotto fight where he had a broken hand going into the fight and pancreatis during his training camp that required him to be hospitalized for a few days in the middle of his camp. Besides those issues working against Gomez for the Cotto fight, Canelo hasn't proven himself to be anything close to the level of prime Cotto yet. So I think the people predicting a Canelo steamroll job based on that fight are going to be in for a shock.
Solid excitement. Alvarez is still in development and Gomez, and underrated boxer-puncher, is a good barometer to see where he stands when pressured by a skilled B+ fighter.
Hmm, good post and some interesting points. Do you think more highly of Gomez then most, do you not think much of Alvarez, a little bit of both? Also, in what ways do you think Gomez has improved over the past few years? Do you think he's gotten inside Alvarez head at all?
