I'm a Gomez fan so I do think more highly of him than most. I tend to think of myself as a realist to his capabilities though, so in a nutshell, my opinion of Alfonso is that in terms of strengths he's a well-rounded fighter capable of fighting inside and outside, is always relaxed in the ring, throws a high volume of punches in combination, is pretty tough, and has heart. His weaknesses are that he lacks natural gifts/athleticism, tends to fade later in fights due to his high volume punching style, and he's not a puncher. At 154 lbs, it can be thrown in that he's undersized for the weight class. As to Alvarez, from what I've seen of him, his strengths are he has good power in both hands, his technical skills are pretty solid, decent hand speed, and he improves with every fight. Weaknesses that I know of are he generally starts slowly in fights, doesn't use his jab much, not the best on foot speed, tends to not really press his opponents as much as he should, and his level of competition is so low that there's no real gauge for how well he can take fire, what he'll do if he has to adapt in the ring, etc. His last three opponents in my opinion have basically been happy to survive and came at him with no real ambition to win. In general, I just think there are a lot of unknowns about Canelo due to his competition to this point. Don't think that Alfonso has gotten into Canelo's head, though the pressure of the event might do so. Canelo doesn't seem the type to let that bother him but you never know. I think Alfonso has improved his lateral and upper body movement the most over the years, though other than that his style is pretty much the same, he just usually plays the role he feels is best for him to win the fight. Against Gatti, he was a boxer/pressure fighter, against Jesus Soto-Karass(his best fight imo given the opponent) he was a boxer/counterpuncher. Optimistically, I think he can take the early advantage against Canelo, using his jab and short combinations on the outside against him, and Canelo will play a somewhat passive counterpuncher role early but find it hard to counter him due to his movement and combinations. About the 4th or 5th round, Canelo will change up and try to apply pressure against Alfonso but will be a little wilder with his shots, and Alfonso will counter him. That'll be the pattern until about the 10th round, when Alfonso will get tired and will probably have to hang on a bit in the last couple of rounds against a desperate Canelo but he's able to do so and takes the decision.
I think its a terrible fight , and i think Gomez is getting demolished Thats pretty much the long and short of it
Should be more competitive than people typically believe. Gomez maybe isn't what I would consider "world class" but he is no slouch and has improved over the years. I agree with other people concerned about Gomez's skin. He just cuts pretty easy.
Alvarez is gonna break down Gomez and it ain't gonna be pretty. This is going to be an execution. Gomez is a good boxer but he lacks the strength, speed and power to ever compete with someone like Alvarez
I don't think it's going to take much to do better than Rhodes' effort against Canelo man, regardless of whether Gomez is actually better than Rhodes or not as an opponent(which I think Rhodes was a regional level guy while Gomez is fringe world class). Gomez will probably throw more punches in the first round against Canelo than Rhodes did in the first three rounds against him.
I don't think Canelo respected Gomez enough and felt he could win the fight any time he wanted so he tried to work on his defense. If Canelo decided to let his hands go earlier and trade a little bit he would have overpowered Gomez. Canelo went away from his strength in order to work on his weaknesses and his weaknesses got exploited. He got work to do if he is looking to become more complete.
