To great fighters is a bit premature. His skill set with no defense will not get him far. Punching power is overrated since he didn't even get a welterweight on the ground. He is better than Chavez Jr. but not by much. Looking at him and comparing him to Trinidad and Fernando Vargas in their youth is like night and day. He will be protected and be a fraud.
Too soon to call him a fraud. But, yes he is protected. The thing is he is young and a ticket seller. Undefeated records are the biggest part of the hype machine, which is bigger in boxing today than ever. Of course, at the end of the day its about who you beat, but this kid just filled a stadium despite fighting a much smaller guy for a bogus title. All promoters are in the business of making money first and making great fighter second. Its all about image to them and selling them to the public who are quick to get on a bandwagon.
As what many of us do when criticizing a fighter’s performance, you’re guilty of neglecting the heart and will of his opponent. The welterweight he was fighting was a very resilient welterweight. And for a 20 year old, yes his defence is understandably leaky, but this should no way be a serious concern yet. He has plenty of time to iron out these flaws. His level of opponents will also be improving, so don’t judge him too soon.
I dont want to be too hard on him yet but having seen a fair bit of M.Hatton I was expecting Canelo to despatch him within 5/6 rounds at most. He's not at the level I thought he was previous to this fight but he has time on his side and has achieved a massive amount for a 20 year old. It remains to be seen wether he can become an elite fighter but i think its fair to say he still has a long way to go.
