He is not a better fighter than Juan Manuel Marquez, Erik Morales, or Marco Antonio Barrera. He is not more talented than Oscar De La Hoya or Julio Cesar Chavez. He has no skills comparable to Salvador Sanchez. With that said why are boxing fans excited about him, he is average and brings nothing new to the table?

He's not even a better fighter than Oscar Valdez.

Yes, maybe, but he's building his career and you are only mentioning people already retired with their full careers built.

Wait until canelo ends his career to open this post. You forget that canelo is 25. 25 yo, man, he's a kid, he has like 10 years more of boxing inside. Then, after he retires, we will be able to compare if you want to.

At best he might be slightly better than Antonio Margarito!

Because despite him not being as Talented as those legendery Mexicans you mentioned, he is one of the few fighters today who comes to fight, and will fight anyone, even at the age of 25.

He's not hiding at 160 without options. He can fight anyone from tough HIGH-RISK/LOW Reward-fights such as Lara and Trout, to Bangers like Angulo and Kirkland, to highly skilled proven fighters like Cotto, to gimme fights like Khan.

In the mean while 34 year old GGG is sucking his thumb WAITING for fighters to come to him while pretending not to hear other fighters are calling his ass out. :deal

He was being groomed into it though. He was promising when young but at an age where you'd expect to see a good amount of growth there's been little. But despite that his fan base has already been built. Personally I;m more interested in Ramirez. Having a Mexican champion at the upper weights is a rarity. Seems like it would garner more attention from fans.

When Ramirez and GGG have fighters like Lara, Trout, Cotto, Angulo, Kirkland under their belts consecutively, then we can start praising them, in the meanwhile we will pay money to watch a fighter who will fight anyone not one who pretends he doesn't know Lara has been calling him out.

All the fighters I listed showed way more skill in the ring during their primes. Retired has nothing to do with it! Can Alvarez match Oscar's speed and footwork? Chavez ability to cut off the ring and make opponents fight his fight? Can he even compare his boxing ability to Marquez, MAB, EM?

Alvarez is slow, flat footed, and predictable. He is more akin to Margarito and Angulo than to any Mexican greats.

I'd say watching a new champion with potential fight a step up in competition is more exciting than any fight with Lara in it. I also said nothing about praising him.

And in his prime with more experience than most fighters at 30. What point are you trying to make though?

Is canelo on his prime? you dont know, unless you are a foreteller, and I doubt it.

Anyway, not being better than chavez is no shame at all. You are unfair. You are taking the best of every one of them, and you are asking canelo for being better than them.

Just wait. 25 yo, you will have your oportunity to denigrate canelo after he retires, because probably he will not be better than chavez. Just wait, give him at least the oportunity to fail to be THE GREATEST MEXICAN BOXER IN HISTORY.

Just a thing, if being 25 yo people are comparing him with names like de la hoya, morales or chavez... he's doing really really well.

Wait for what? His feet to get faster? His hand speed to increase? You think he will become more limber with age? Alvarez is stiff, straight up and down, and as Floyd says with no special effects!

He is a plodder, to me plodding is one of the worse things you can be in boxing. Golovkin would likely destroy Alvarez's predictable patterned style. One word you never associate with Alvarez is "fast" and imo that will be his downfall.

One thing about all the Mexican greats I listed is they were fast, had adaptable styles, could box and brawl, and they used their bodies to ruff up opponents if need be. Alvarez outweighs and outsize his opponents yet won't fight on the inside or use his body to push and pin. This is why he was so easy for Floyd to take apart, he's learned nothing from that schooling!

Golovkin knows how to get the fight with Canelo.

Canelo is waiting for the bum-killer to accept the terms.
