Quintana would be an ok option for Alvarez but he's too far past his best to win and Alvarez needs to take a bigger step up than this version of Quintana, not too mention he's not a fighter you put on a ppv main event. Alvarez is fighting Sept. so that doesn't leave enough time for Mayeather or even the Bundrage-Spinks winner since they are fighting in the same time frame. Cotto would be the obvious choice but I don't know if Cotto would want that fight and I'm not sure Alvarez's people take that big of a jump since Cotto proved he still has a lot left. Kirkland is a possibliity but I don't know if he's ready for tha date due to his injury. Williams would be an interesting choice but he's probably still too dangerous and could ruin a Mayweather-Alvarez fight. Lara, I'd be surprised since he's all risk and little reward. There's always Mayorga who would be a big enough name to headlne with Alvarez and is too faded to pull the win, and would make for an entertaining fight and pre-fight but I don't know if he's still boxing anymore. There's always the Ortiz-Berto winner as well, it will be intersting to see who Alvarez faces in Sept. especially with it being a ppv.
Now I never thought about Mayorga. He'd be a reasonable name for Canelo...considering it'll be the first PPV he's headlining. They would need to have a pretty strong undercard or co-feature for it to work though...
Mayorga, really? Another corpse to feed young Canelo, he needs to fight his mandatory or vacate the belt and then he can fight all the living dead he wants, he doesn't need protection from the fans, he already have Sulaiman and DLH, we fans should be screaming for him to fight Vanes, Lara or Williams, not playing match makers and mentioning fighters that have no chance at all...
Mayorga fits in a lot of ways. He's got the name, too faded to pull the upset, not with Top Rank, and would make a fun fight. I don't know if he's the guy but it wouldn't surprise me if he gets the shot. Being the first ppv he's headlined there's probably going to have to be another bigger name guy or two on the card. Unless Alvarez faces Cotto, that fight probably sells well on its own since Cotto has a nice following himself.
I wouldn't be surprised if it's Quintana. He fought on this past undercard, he's around top 15 or so and he's a southpaw, which there are a ton of at 154 but is something Alvarez still hasn't seen much of (I'm not 100% sure of this, but I don't believe he's fought a single southpaw his entire career). It helps set up Alvarez-Kirkland pretty well, and uses up a limited time option for a fighter who likes to stay busy anyway. That said, they might just skip straight to Kirkland. This will be fight 8 or 9 of a 10 fight contract with GBP, and Alvarez is already making rumblings that he'll just go solo once the contract expires.
it cnt be mayorga i said clottey earlier is cnt be him either , just fight quintana if u wanna grow a pair fight top 5 guy
Unfortunately, someoene like Mayorga has name value to the average boxing fan. Sure, some of the more hardcore fans like ones who are on sites like this know Alvarez should be facing Cotto, Kirkland, Williams, etc but we make up a very small percentage of boxing fans. If you look at boxing honestly and knowing how it has worked forever than guys like Mayorga and Mosley are the type of opponents for someone like Alvarez. Young up and comers make their names/following by beating faded and former stars.
I think he mentioned Mayorga as a safe name since it'll be his first PPV as the headliner. It obviously isn't the fight that we want to see but it's interesting to discuss... Most would rather see him fight Cotto in Sept. but that just isn't going to happen. Canelo isn't ready and Junito deserves a rest after a grueling camp and a war with the p4p#1. Realistically, I see Kirkland as the most likely candidate but his health is a major question. If his shoulder isn't ready, then I suppose Angulo would be the easiest fight to make since he's a GBP fighter also...
But for a PPV?! Probably a 50/60$ (in HD) type PPV fight?! Unless there's two primed, hungry, world class guys fighting on even terms on the undercard, no thank you. . . . This would be good for a BAD fight, MAYBE a world championship boxing fight, but not PPV. . . But then again, it's a good thing, because it wouldn't waste preicous slots on free HBO.
I do understand the business part, but I'll not pay for a Mayorga-Quintana vs Canelo fight, there's no way they suck me in, he has to validate his position as a Champ and will only do it against his mandatory or a guy like Williams, he has a name and still in his prime, a little shop worn but it will give him credibility if he wins, another thing this is a hard business and Sulaiman, GBP and Canelo himself are preventing guys like Vanes and Lara to earn decent money just because they might be that good, do you think is fair? Like Rizzo say (Abril's manager) we don't know others fighters because HBO, SHO and the big time promoters are recycling the same fighters all the time, it doesn't matter if they lose they will bring them back, I'm tired of seeing the Mayorgas and Mosley's of the World fighting young lions and getting beat up, I want to see a competitive fight...
Why would this one have to be on PPV? They'll pay Canelo what he got paid for this PPV ($2 million) to be on regular HBO. Plus, then it sets up Alvarez-Kirkland for the undercard of the next Mayweather fight. But I doubt they put Canelo up against Kirkland before he's ever faced a southpaw, and Quintana is probably a little less dangerous than Kirkland. All there is out there is an unsubstantiated rumor that his next fight will be September on PPV (which could easily be a Mayweather undercard again, honestly, if Floyd wants to come back quickly after prison to rehabilitate his image a bit).
Well, if that's the case. . . But Oscar has already been saying how he's going to headline his own PPV in September - I think they want to see how well he does on PPV. . . . And Quintana would be a horrible match to prepare him for Kirkland. . . Being SP is all they have in common. And Canelo/Kirkland is a PPV event, no sense in putting that on an undercard for a Floyd fight that is already gonna do big business. They want to maximize profits off each.
It's probably the biggest boxing weekend of the year so it has to be a PPV, IMO. That's why his list of opponents for this date is so short. It has to be a credible opponent with name recognition and being a Golden Boy fighter doesn't hurt either...
