Thiago Alves missed the 170-lb Welterweight limit, thus the Matt Hughes-Thiago Alves main event tomorrow night is now going to be billed a 174-lb Catchweight fight. How do you think this plays into the result of the fight?:think
You know, I was picking Matt Hughes before, because I assumed he would take Alves down and pound out a rough decision/late submission. But seeing that Alves is going to have a big weight advantage (more than four pounds considering rehydration), this fight all of a sudden sounds a little more dangerous for Hughes.
I'd say if Alves actually tried to make weight really hard, then its advantage Hughes, because Alves probably sweat every last bit of water out of him and will have trouble getting back to normal. Hughes has the cut to 170 down to a science, so hes gonna be 100%. Big blow to Alves carreer though, first he gets busted for diuretics a few months ago, then can't make weight, doesn't speak real well to his ability to make the weight in the future.
Not good. If he really tried and couldn't make weight that is one thing if it is just a ploy because he didn't want to drain that is another. I'll take Hughes UD.
I hate when guys can't make weight. Should Hughes lose, the weight issue can easily be used as an excuse, and perhaps legitimately so. I'll still go with Hughes though.

Here are two scenarios in which the weight will matter: 1. Thiago Silva, knowing well before he would not make weight, will be much stronger than Hughes, be able to avoid his take-down attempts, and win by a brutal knockout (Thai-Boxer destroys a Wrestler in a stand-up fight). 2. Thiago Silva, dehydrating himself in an ill-fated last minute attempt to make weight, is much weaker than Hughes, and blows his load in the first few minutes. Hughes takes him down, pounds him, and wins by late round submission (Wrestler destroys Thai-Boxer in a ground fight). Hmm?:bbb
I think a loss to Alves would be devastating because, in my estimation, a prime Matt Hughes would easily handle a green thai-boxer like Thiago Alves. But nowadays, it seems like even money. If he loses, IMO, he's probably gone. If he wins, hello HUGHES-SERRA!!!
