The fight showed that JT was clearly the better fighter. The knockdown at the end was the icing on the cake.
Very entertaining fight. Great countering on Toney's part and great hard work on Jirov's part. In my eyes, Toney could have been dominate, but each time he relaxed, Jirov continued to work. On my card Jirov was given credit for hard work. An example is most of the fight, Toney had his back on the rope, throwing one hard counter at a time and ducking and rolling the return, but the return never stopped coming as his one at a time punches became fewer. I did have Toney by a close card, and was surprized that on the official card it was so wide. Roach did not have that card. Roach told Toney that he had to drop Jirov, possibly stop him to win. Great fight.
Again, I had Toney ahead at the end... but I thought it was somewhat close. Jirov showed effective aggressiveness. He was landing shots (doesn't matter how sloppy or even how hard) that kept Toney from doing what Toney wanted to do. Also, Jirov's workrate was making Toney fight when he really didn't want to. At times Toney looked uncomfortable and threw more punches than he was used to throwing... Jirov controlled the pace in the first half of the fight. I'll give Toney credit. His stamina was good and he was able to outtough Jirov late in the fight. I just don't see why so many people think this was an easy fight for Toney.
I dont either. Your description of the fight perfectly nailed it. If Toney was in poor condition, he would have lost.
