The Arthur Abraham - Dirrell incident made me think of this... In 1996, Roy Jones Jr. was DQ'd for hitting Montell Griffin when Griffin was down. People accused Griffin of acting like he was more hurt than he was, but does anyone remember that Griffin was actually winning before the DQ? I haven't seen the fight since then, and I may be wrong, but I recall Griffin was giving Roy all he could handle, and if he wasn't winning, it was definitely closer than any of Jone's previous fights. I also remember thinking that Jones hit Griffin while he was down because Roy knew he was headed for a loss, so took the easy way out...one thing is a FACT, and that is Griffin was CLEARLY down, and Jones CLEARLY hit him while he was down! Someone help me out on these recollections...maybe Jones wasn't losing, maybe the cheap shots weren't intentional, but that is how I recall it...
Since all fighters know hitting someone on the canvas is DQ, I don't think these are intentional blows, however you still get DQ'd whatever your reason to throw an illegal punch, Jones, Abraham and obviously Pac should have a DQ for his similar shot in the 1st Marquez fight. This is a serious sport, we gotta keep it clean.

And Griffin took a knee to get a rest because he was hurt and Roy was all over him. Roy was headed for a KO win.
Wow! What exactly were you smoking when you watched that fight?! It had been a tight fight, but Jones had hauled himself ahead on 2 cards by the time of the DQ, and the DQ itself was just a rush of blood to the head from Jones, who sensed he was on the brink of a KO victory, he was dismantling Griffin at the time and if the DQ had never happened, Griffin would have been KTFO shortly after for sure! I urge you to watch the fight again and fast!
Griffin had been doing well but was just knocked down and in serious trouble. Roy did that out of frustration -- as he'd never had a tough fight like that before -- and deservedly was DQd. Definitely not a great night for Roy. Also, Griffin's delayed reaction was similar to what we saw from Dirrell. I'd post the gif if I knew how to do that. :huh
Antonio Tarver referenced the fight during the broadcast. I also thought of Terry Norris and Luis Santana's first two fights. :-( at Norris. "Oh, the bell rang, and the ref is between us two and talking to him, it must be a great time now to hit him!"
Griffin was acting for sure - Dirrell had not reason to, winning handily with Abraham about to lose a point, why act, referee would give you five minutes MINIMUM to recover he would have won in a walk. Abraham is a shitbag but what can you do. If he had just said sorry at the end of it- no problem.
It was a good call.Jones clearly hit Griffin when Griffin was on one knee. And Jones protested strongly. However, after seeing what transpired on the viewing screen,Jones said,"I would have disqualified me,too."
Norris got DQ'd in the first fight for hitting Santana behind the head. Santana was carried out on a stretcher. Norris got DQ'd in the rematch for hitting after the bell, when the ref was between the two. Santana again was carried out on a stretcher. Norris won the third match in two rounds. I didn't see it, but I heard some camera angles caught Santana smiling when he was on the stretcher. Norris also got DQ'd early in his career for hitting an opponent on the canvas. He also hit Leonard on the floor when he knocked him down.
He was DQ'd but notice he beat Santana when he didn't get too anxious to hit him when he shouldn't have. Santana faked the rabbit punch in the first fight in my opinion.
