It not a complete disaster, RJJ did worse in his early PPV's. But it's not a success either, that number of PPV's just about covers their purses, so while the network did lose a lot of money on this show they didn't make much either. I don't expect any TV network to be clamouring to throw money at either of them anytime soon. I just hope the competitiveness of the first fight will help sell the rematch.
They won't. They'll still get paid their purses but the Promoters are the ones who lost money, if that's the case.
It's clearly not a good number, most analysts thought it would clear 200k at least. So it was below expectations. I thought it would do about 300k due to the quality of the matchup. I thought Kovalev was reasonably well-known due to the Hopkins victory. Clearly I was wrong, I suspect it was the high price, the lack of publicity, and the anger from May-Pac that scuttled the numbers.
The only people to blame are the promoters. This fight should have been an easy fight to promote. The American promoters are currently doing a shocking job. Goldenboy have chose to put all their eggs in one basket with Canelo and they're doing reasonably well. But he's no superstar and the reason for that is he doesn't speak English and he's cherry picking opponents. You'll never create a genuine superstar with these flaws. Something needs to change in America regarding the promotional end of things. The promoters/TV networks are simply doing a bad job. You only have to look at the success of boxing in the UK to see that there's still a big appetite out there for boxing if it's promoted and presented well.
160k for this and 50-60k for Crawford-Postol makes the 100-150k for GGG/Lemieux look better than It first appeared.
The issue isn't that it's good enough it's that the bar is so high. We always come late it to May and PAC. It shouldn't be compared to them or even cotto to be honest.
All those fights you mentioned, including Ward-Kovalev should not be on PPVs. PPVs should be reserved for cash cows and or fights that are in very high demand by the "general public".
Maybe fighters are getting overpaid then. That is another problem for boxing. Fighters getting over paid. Ward-Kovalev is a fight the general public needed to see. It was a serious and important fight, showcasing two of the best fighters in their primes. Putting it on PPV is a HUGE disservice to the future of boxing.
