Am I the only one who thinks Povetkin upsets Joshua?

First off: I like Anthony Joshua. I think he has done an admirable job of picking up the pieces after Fury abandoned the division, and after fighting rivals Whyte, Martin, Klitschko, Parker, and now Povetkin, I don't see how anyone can fault him. I hope he has a good long reign. This is not motivated by dislike or wishful thinking.

But I think he is in for a surprise.

    1) Joshua is not an invincible looking guy. He has tough fights against Whyte, who is not that good, and Klitschko, a post-40 guy who had been out of the ring for, what, a year and a half? The Parker fight left a lot to be desired. Really, he is a big offensive machine. Nothing wrong with that--what a machine! But he is hardly shows a plethora of skills.

    2) Povetkin is the best contender out there. Forget Wilder, who is a fraud. Povetkin has had a storied career with wins over very good guys like Chagaev, Byrd, Chambers, Huck, Charr, and Rahmen. Perhaps not murder's row, but an excellent record overall.

    3) Yeah, he knows how to fight tall guys. The idea that he can't beat big fighters seems to come solely from the Klitchsko fight, where he was man-loved to death. Josua doesn't fight that way. These two are going to engage and Povetkin will land his big overhand right that he used against taller fighters in the amateurs. In combo with the hook, it will be deadly.

    4) He is going to go all out. This is it. Last chance. He is going to come out swinging for the fences. Josh better be prepared.

Finally, I don't mean to be flippant bout this, but...

    5) I honestly feel that if Povetkin ever was on PEDS, they will get him on something again that is not detectable.

And there it is. Just a feeling.

    POST SCRIPT:

    I am adding...

    6) Overconfidence. Joshua already has another fight scheduled and is much more interested in what Wilder and Fury are up to.

    7) As derived by others, Joshua does not hit THAT hard. He is a good puncher, but Takam was taken out more quickly by Chisora, he failed to drop Parker who was dropped by White, a younger Klitschko was stopped more effectively by Sanders...It will be dangerous for him to trade with Povetkin.

I feel it. Povetkin's whole career has always been underrated. If I have a gun to my head, I roll with Joshua here but it's close if I'm giving it an X/Y odd, something like 60/40-ish in Joshua's favor. Chance that the old man knocks him, I do think.

Obviously not, go in any thread and there is a very vocal minority saying Povetkin will ko him.

Personally I cant see it, and a 39 year old 2x drug cheat who was DESTROYED in his prime by the last eras great heavyweight beating AJ would be horrible for the division.

But you are far from alone.

I give povetkin the punchers chance but if Joshua stays focused and fights to the plan it shouldnt be too tough for him imo. I think povetkin fades badly late in the fight.

And yet, we have seen Big Josh blowing gas in a couple of fights.

    Thanks for the response, though.

Its been underrated because he hasnt been on PED'S for every fight.

The ones where he hasn't he's looked pedestrian.

If he's tryly this devestating heavyweight killer theres no excuse for having a 12 round life and death slugfest with huck.

It's abberations like that where he was obviously cycling off that makes you wonder.

Both times he's gassed were when he went on an all out assault and threw about 50 power punches in a row, and his tank refilled.

Joshua can temporarily punch himself out which he's worked on.

Povetkin is 39 and an 8 round fighter at this stage who was on meldonium which is a stamina enhancer.

Give joshua meldonium so he's got unlimited stamina and he'd be unbeatable

    ?

    C'mon dude.

Huck fight. One razor close fight that it seems most scored one round to Huck, I myself had that a draw. And his loss to Klitschko. That's the only negatives. The dude has beaten a solid list of fighters.

Thats the thing though making excuses for any question marks over povetkin while amplifying every one of AJ's faults.

Povetkin has faced 1 elite heavyweight and got destroyed

AJ has beaten 2 guys better than povetkin

    I know who in picking

He's a good fighter but will just be another notch on AJ's belt. Povetkin nearly lost to Price, he's too old now and in all honestly was always going to be too short for AJ.

Nope you're not on your own, I see Povetkin sparking Joshua out cold, aj seems to have not only taken his eye off the ball but has kicked it out of the stadium, he is beginning to look too far ahead lately and that is dangerous.
    Povetkin still KOs him though.

Been a Povetkin fan for years. The Wilder duck of him was the biggest one since Donald, and by all rights, Povetkin is the other heavyweight champion in the division, not Wilder. Povetkin will give Joshua a hard solid fight, but at his age, with his height, and his legs and agility slowing up, going to tip Joshua in this one.

Agreed, some have fallen too much for the hype and his offensive ability, thinking he would just blow away Takam and Parker and now ignore how he performed vs them and think he'll just blow away the more dangerous Povetkin.

I see Joshua as similar to Bowe right now, big, powerful, good inside with a good variety of shots in his arsenal but he's still lacking in many more nuanced areas of boxing. The Wlad fight showed that, he's improving but he's far from invincible right now.

Lol, read "Povetkin has had a storied career" as "Povetkin has has a steroid career." But yes he's very much far more a proven fighter than say Parker, Wilder or Ortiz.

Yes I said something similar before in another thread. Povetkin vast majority of Povetkin's opponents were bigger than him and he beat all but one of them, usually convincingly. Plus Joshua likes to trade inside, he'll give Povetkin opportunities that Takam and Parker refused to do with their movement. As long as the ref lets them fight inside, I see a good part of this fight being fought at Povetkin's range.

I'm still favouring Joshua to KO Povetkin in the middle rounds but I think Povetkin gives Joshua his toughest fight apart from Wlad despite that.

Anyone who thinks Povetkin upsets AJ please watch that Povetkin vs Wach fight, if you struggling with the jab of a lumbering pole like Wach tell me how he will be able to handle AJs jab which comes with more power and speed?

I am confident Povetkin has a huge chance to pull of the upset.

Povetkin definitely have chance, especially in the first six rounds of the fight. Joshua have to be very focused and break down Povetkin methodically, and not get drawn into a slugfest. I actually consider Povetkin to be the more skillful of the two, so Joshua have to use his size and strenght to his advantage.

However, I believe Povetkin is slipping. He is not a shot fighter in any way, but he is past prime. Call it post PED’s if you will, but a small fight relying on explosiveness at age 39 is past his best. I predict a late stoppage win for Joshua, unless Povetkin goes into survival mode like Parker and takes the L by wide UD.
