I noticed during the fight that Rafael looked ripped, especially his delts seemed huge, just as JMM's did against Pacquiao. Do you think he made some changes in his training to follow his brother's footsteps? On a sidenote: I didn't expect Esquivias to comprehensively outskill Marquez. I think his inside fighting resembles Bradley's a lot, and I believe the Marquez brothers have the same fundamentals. Now, Bradley said he needs to fight a smart fight, but I think he stands his best chance if he brings the game to JMM and smothers him inside. What do you guys think?
This would totally make sense. Far be it for the elder Marquez brother to achieve tremendous advantages and not share it with lil' bro if he can.
Yeah, he was very cut up, picturesque even - doesn't change the fact of him being 38, the recipient (if also distributor) of an excess of punishment over the years, and now at the point where he is getting wailed on and sustaining medically emergent orbital bone fractures at the hands of (with all due respect to Esquivias) a B- level operator. Evander Holyfield is still incredibly fit, you know.
It was painful to watch from the opening bell he seemed like a shadow of himself his balance was shot & Rafa was arm punching 90%. Props to Esquivias tho, Dude might have had the style to trouble even a post trilogy RM?
That was all true as far back as the Juan Ma loss, and in the Nishioka and Mijares losses as well. The couple of tuneups where he blew out cans, those didn't really show the genuine state he was in. Yeah, I think Esquivias with his chin, pop and above average skills could have sprung the upset any time in the last three years. Prime Marquez, however - forget it. He takes Esquivias out behind the woodshed. (though he still might get dropped in the process; always high probability with the Marquez bros. :yep)
I remember back in the day when Rafa was touted by most as being the better and more skilled brother.:-(
There was a point in time when there wasn't much separating them. That is by no means an insult to JuanMa. (and yes, I still reserve the right to call him by that nickname in spite of most people thinking it's somehow become the sole dominion of that Puerto Rican kid even though Dinamita went by it years earlier)
Yeah but with Rafa's style you knew he wouldn't have the longevity too many wars. With that said great fighter in his prime and exciting to watch.
Yeah, that's what I meant. In their respective primes the brothers were pretty close together in p4p h2h ability. Elder bro was still top bunk, of course - but it wasn't a huge divide. Juan Manuel, because he is such a consummate technician and spent much of his career in the counter-punching role and took much less damage than Rafael, will go down as having the far greater legacy...but Raf's is still nothing to sneeze at.
