Am I the ONLY ONE who thought Cotto did quite well?

This was going by watching it first time round.

Cotto had much better ring generalship, he used his footwork very well to take advantage of the fact that Canelo doesn't cut off the ring and just hangs back lol
Cotto was just in and out trying to pointscore, Cotto's return fire shots were on point (as were Canelo's). Roach's plans worked although Canelo is far too defensively responsible and wise to fall for Cotto's hook. He was able to notice when Cotto was trying to set it up.

Especially if you're a Mayweather fan and had Mayweather beating Pacquiao considerably, then you need to acknowledge Cotto's ring generalship.

I don't have an exact scorecard, but it was more likely a draw if not a marginal Cotto victory. I need to watch this again under a more relaxed circumstances.

I'm glad Canelo got the decision though because he's willing to fight anyone, and if he decided he wants to go up to 160 for Golovkin, that's what's going to happen, whereas Cotto is going to continue as a complete phoney.

    ^ good assessment. I

I felt a draw or a Canelo 1pt win was fair. I will have to do a second viewing as well. Some of the cards I felt were way off base.

he did better as I expected.
I thought he would crumble in the later rounds, but he clearly didn't.

That said, he lost. But not nearly as wide as the scorecards indicated.

I thought Cotto did very well too, but I still think Canelo won by a significant margin.

The only thing Cotto could have did to win IMO is dip more of Canelo's shots and return with his own.

I thought Cotto did well, and still think Floyd >>>>>>>>>> Oscar.

Exactly, this is one problem I have with Cotto's return fires. He eats leather far too unnecessarily and far too frequently, to land his own. It works for him because he puts a lot of leverage behind his shots, but against Canelo it's going to work less and hey, it did, because Canelo is good at seeing shots coming and evading them.

I wanted to see more body work from Cotto at closer range. He was headhunting a little too much from what I remember.

Canelo is very passive. I felt Cotto dealt with his own stamina issues very well with his evolved strategy pertaining to ring generalship.

Has Canelo improved since the Mayweather fight? Marginally, only.

Oscar is greater than Mayweather. PRIME Oscar would at least draw against Mayweather.

Anyone who thinks he didn't win doesn't know how to score a fight

I picked Cotto to win but I thought Alvarez won last night in a very underwhelming fight.

Prime vs Prime or prime Oscar vs that version of mayweather?

Cos prime Mayweather would beat the cr*p outa him IMO.

Anyway i thought Cotto looked preety good in there but Canelo's handspeed suprised him i thought, as well as having a better than expected defence.

I completely agree. Canelo didn't really seem improved much to me either. He was the younger, bigger, stronger, faster guy but It was pretty obvious he was the lesser boxer. Cotto took his shots and circled around him for 12, so he should get some credit too. Btw I didn't see anything in Canelo that'd make me think he has a chance against Golovkin.

I disagree, I think Canelo has the punching power to bother GGG. The problem with GGG’s opponents is that they can’t match GGG punch for punch. Canelo has the snap on his punches that GGG’s past opponents didn’t have. Canelo can compete with GGG because GGG would have to respect Canelo’s power. Yes Canelo is slightly smaller than GGG, but with the right training camp with preparation he could put on a few pounds of muscle and cause GGG problems.

However honestly I just don’t think Canelo is ready for GGG yet. He needs to recapture the 154-lb titles next, and allow 1-2 years for a Canelo - GGG fight to buildup. Canelo and GGG are the biggest names in the sport right and this isn’t a fight you want to rush!

Unlike Mayweather vs Pacquaio, where Mayweather's best move was the triple flinch, back up and run maneuver, Canelo was the hunter and landed the better shots.

Pacquaio hurt Mayweather on several occasions. Mayweather did nothing to Pacquaio.

Canelo hurt Cotto on several occasions. Cotto did nothing to Canelo.

Mayweather vs Pacquaio is a bad comparison.
