Well, he certainlly seemed to favor the cleaner, conventional, middle of the ring, pot shot style of fighting more than the mugging, brawling style Hatton employs. That being said, it was also apparent that he allowed Floyd to forearm and elbow Hatton on numerous occasions. Not a clean fight, overall a poor job of letting the fight develop, and the fighters fight.
I thought Cortez was too early on some occasions and too slow (probably too old) when he missed some things he should have caught, but he wasn't nearly as bad as some of you say. He was probably too sensitive about the mauling, but no one except Hatton fans wanted a repeat of the final four rounds in the Urango fight. He wasn't perfect, but I'd rather see a guy be too quick to stop grappling rather than too slow. In other words, give me Cortez in this fight rather than the guy who refereed Hatton vs. Tszyu.
I thought he did a good job. When he broke them Hatton was not punching he was just grabbing, If he was punching then fine but he wasnt. Mayweathers short right uppercuts kept him in line from going all out. Hatton was the one that was clearly initiating the holding and he was also hitting behind the head.. All you Hatton fans are sad. YOu were all happy when you heard he was the ref now that he did his job you're bitching and crying, Stop with the tears. Your man got beat fair and square
Cortez did a shitty job. If you can't see it then you're lying to yourself or just stupid. But nobody is claiming that it would have changed the outcome :nono
which is why i love kenny bayless. he just lets the fight be and yells at the guys from a distance and only gets in when really needed.
And then why are the Hatton fans are bringing it up? You're not allow to hold and hit and thats what Hatton does. If he can fight inside without holding PBF wouldn't have to stick his elbow out to make space for himself.
I'm not going to say Cortez did a bad job (although I'm British and think he did :hey ) I would have liked to see Tony Weeks ref the fight, he let Chico-JLC 1 flow so beautifully. Also to markbrooklyn Ricky was still undefeated in January 2007.
Niether did Tszyu or his camp complain about the ref in the Hatton fight, both fighters were rough housing eachother in that fight,
