Am I the only person who wasn't remotely impressed by RJJ against Trinidad??

How will you feel Pac when Roy hands Joe a beatdown much similar to that of Woods?
    Well brace yourself my friend

If that happened I genuinely think I may die of ecstasy, I have always adored RJJ as a fighter and the Tarver and Johnson fights made me cry, but so so sadly I can see nothing other than a Calslappy stoppage. Peak v peak, RJJ would do a Clinton on him, no doubt.

    Yeah.

Roy was flat footed, taking 5-10cm steps all night, may as well have been wearing lead boots. He threw 1-2 punches at a time on a target that he could have hit at will, and had a low overall workrate.

The annoying thing was that he toyed with Trinidad, instead of laying some hurt on him.

But as you say, it was a necessary confidence booster for him. Especially because he looked like he wasn't even trying, and was just playing with him for most of the fight.

Whens the last time Joe stopped anyone? He hasn't thrown a hard punch since the Lacy fight.

The Manfredo stoppage was a joke, as Manfredo was fine, Joe was just flurrying away and making it look a lot worse than it really was.

Roy will at least be experienced enough to throw a punch every now and then to show that he isn't in fairyland.

I don't have high hopes for Roy in this fight but i doubt Joe can stop him.

Roy said the McClellen injury really bothered him and I think it took away some of his killer instinct.

I could not agree more with all of this. If you take a look at my 'Should JMM move to p4p#2 if he beats Casa?' thread, you will see I have been arguing those same points you made against some Calzaghe fanboys.

I think Calzaghe will stop Jones in the same way he stopped Manfredo, a blinding flurry of slaps. RJJ doesn't have the resilience anymore to avoid this, he is a shell of the fighter he was. Calzaghe will get to him when he's tired and pile on the pressure, and Jones doesn't have the defensive nous of Hopkins to nullify Calzaghe's attacks.

That I believe this will happen is the reason why I hate this fight so much.

He has developed an okay guard to make up for his other short comings of recent years, which i think could eat up a lot of those wide-easily-detectable Calzaghe punches.

He is also still a solid counter puncher even though he may be a shell of his former self. And with his experience i think he would understand the chance of a bull**** stoppage and have the intelligence to throw the odd well placed punch to show the ref and corner he is fine.

I think those tools alone are enough to avoid a stoppage.

In the Trinidad fight even though Roy was mocking Tito at times it was kinda like two mismatched friends sparring i thought. As though Roy wanted to show he was on a different level, and just too big for Tito, but didn't really want to hurt him.

Thats my point entirely, Jones knew Trinidad would be a pushover, and instead of going in for the kill he gave the fans a show, however Roy won't take Joe in the same light. Roy will remind us come November why we hail him as the master and one of the most gifted fighters to lace up the gloves. Jones has ability and intelligence that can't be compared to anyone. This will be the first time Joe has been at a mental disadvantage. Joe is extremely smart and one of the most intelligent fighters of our time, however the fact is Roy is on a whole level above Joe in terms of ability and intelligence, all by himself. You doubters will feel ashamed after doubting the master in favor of an overglorified slapper come fight nite, trust me on this:yep

I was watching the Trinidad - Jones fight the other night actually, thought his corner work was funny, in between rounds, he would say what he was doing currently and what he was going to do.

But yeah the problem with the Trinidad fight is just that, he wasn't trying to push himself, or destory Tito. So it makes predicting a more serious level-matched fight more difficult.

I'm hoping Joe's high workrate will bump Roys up and he will actually attempt to throw counters all night. I don't think Joe can hurt him.

I thought Roy looked good. It was a good combination of him knowing his obvious talents and his newfound limitations.

I thought it showed that he was more than just all skill.

Agreed, I feel that Jones was holding back in his last two fights. Against Calzaghe Jones will need to control the pace of the fight for him to win.

    Exactly.

He knows how gifted he was as a fighter and he knew he could hurt people if he pushed the gas. He's had numerous fights where he would be hitting a guy on accumulation and would look at the ref as if it say, "How come you're not stopping it?" Just on top of my head, Shannon, Woods, Sosa, etc. So many. And before he fought Vinny Pazienza, he was worried that he might break his neck again as Vinny was coming off an accident of some sort and broke his neck.

And the McClellan fight did change RJJ's mentality. But only true RJJ fans know that. The fools think RJJ was trying to KO Trinidad but failed.
