    Would anybody disagree with this?

Tyson unified the title, something Holmes never did.

Holmes never won the title in his comeback, Tyson did.

Tyson beat most mutual opponents in better fashion.

Tyson beat Spinks who beat Holmes.

    Tyson beat Holmes too

Holmes had the longer reign, but Tyson cleared the division out in 2-3 years whereas Holmes is accused of ducking XYZ and not giving certain rematches.

    h2h comparison :
    h2h : Tyson by TKO
Spinks : Tyson KO1 , Holmes lost by decision *2
    Berbick : Tyson TKO2 , Holmes : UD15
    Carl Williams : Tyson KO1 , Holmes UD15
    Holyfield : Tyson LTKO11 , LDQ , Holmes LUD12
Fergusson : Tyson TKO , Holmes dec
James Smith : Tyson UD12 , Holmes cuts TKO , TKO
    Marvis Frazier : Tyson TKO1 , Holmes TKO1

p4p comparison : add to it that holmes had a big size advantage over tyson ..
    result : Tyson > Holmes both p4p and h2h .
true the holmes whom had common opponents with the younger by 17 years tyson was old , but young holmes was **** vs norton & shavers not to mention crappy cooney managed to be competitive against him ..
just imagine tyson vs norton , leon spinks , scott ledoux , earnie shavers , gerrie cooney , tex cobb etc , young holmes was **** if anything and might have been worse than the old holmes as much as i find it hard to believe myself. young holmes was a serial ducker whom still needed fouls and bribed don king referees in order to "win" his handpicked opponents .

I used to feel the same way. And if Tyson had retired after Spinks than he belongs in the top 3. But you can't ignore his post prison stint even though he was far removed from his prime. His reign as undisputed heavyweight champion is more than enough to crack the top 10 but his post prison "glory" keeps him out of the top half.

Holmes came thisclose to tying Marciano. Whether he "ducked" certain challengers or not (I feel he didn't) Holmes deserves to be ranked higher than Tyson.

Head to head is a different story.

The only real problem with Tysons post prison stint is, the loss to Holyfield. IMO he was more than able to beat Holyfield but by the time he had brought in Giachetti for the rematch it was too late too little.

He also ignored most of the top guys and fought lower end gargbage, probably for money reasons.

You cant accuse Tyson of ducking anyone, maybe except Foreman (thats been done to death here so not going to go through it)

Neither of them has a win over an ATG in his prime.

Holmes fought Ali, Spinks, Tyson, Holyfield.
Tyson fought Holmes, Spinks, Holyfield, Lewis

Tyson beat 2 ATGs. Holmes 1

even if you choose to rank based on charisma , public impact , personal charm , sex appeal and poetic quality tyson wins it big , there is no way holmes ranks above tyson at anything .

I agree with what you said.

Tyson only ever lost to bigger men with a size advantage like Douglas and Lewis.

Holmes seem to have losses against smaller men Spinks, Tyson, Holyfield.

Maybe title defenses and reign. But as i stated earlier, Tyson cleared out his division within 2-3 years. Holmes didnt in his 7+ years.

    :rofl

I don't disagree though. Especially the sex appeal which is a grossly underrated quality in our fighters.

    :lol::lol:****ing hell.

Well, I'm a fan of both fighters. My two favorite heavies growing up.
One aspect about Tyson's reign that gets overlooked are his 9 defenses in 3 years. 4th most at the time behind only Louis, Ali and Holmes. Tyson and Holmes' resumes are very similar. I guess longevity is a factor for me. Tyson wasted a lot of his prime and squandered his opportunity to regain the title by going to prison. Where Tyson got worse with age Holmes actually made a better account of himself in his comeback. I guess I need to see a really good argument for putting Tyson ahead of Holmes

Regarding a fight with Holyfield: Tyson no doubt in my mind beats Holyfield prime for prime.

I remember watching the Douglas fight where Tyson was set to break Louis record of Ko wins in championship fights, or something like that.
Longetivity is a factor true, Tyson was one of the top heavyweights more or less as soon as he turned pro upto the Lewis loss. Tyson got worse with age because he couldnt do what Holmes could. Holmes was bigger and could easily just rely on his jab and size advantage, a short fighter like Tyson cant do that.

Yes, it would be damn well wrong to rank Tyson above Holmes. Forget about Holmes's losses, he defeated the better people through and through. A win is a win, it doesn't matter if Tyson did it in 1 or Larry in 15.

    Let's see who Larry beat.

    Earnie Shavers 55-6-1

    Ken Norton 40-4-0

    Ossie Ocasio 13-0-0

    Mike Weaver 19-8-0

    Earnie Shavers II 60-7-1

    Muhammad Ali 56-3-0

    Trevor Berbick 18-1-1

    Leon Spinks 10-2-2

    Renaldo Snipes 22-0-0

    Gerry Cooney 25-0-0

    Randall "Tex" Cobb 21-2-0

    Tim Witherspoon 15-0-0

    Marvis Frazier 10-0-0

    James "Bonecrusher" Smith 14-1-0

    Carl Williams 16-0-0

    Ray Mercer 18-0-0

    Jose Ribalta 32-9-1

    James "Bonecrusher" Smith II 44-16-1

    Mike Weaver II 41-17-1

Plus he fought in a tougher era and fought a lot of undefeated guys and had two legendary fights with Shavers and Norton.

He also gave Holyfield one hell of a fight!

Had the better longevity, and I also don't think H2H should be factored into rankings because then it's partially based on what "might" have happened if fighter A "possibly" did this to fighter B.

Albeit Tyson destroyed Holmes, Larry was coming off of a layoff and two losses to Michael Spinks. Not saying that it excuses him, he still got his ass royally handed to him, but it wasn't as if Mike stormed and raged through a prime Larry Holmes

I'd have Tyson in the top 10. Any higher than 8 is a little bit silly. Holmes is a lock for top 4.

Holmes lost to Tyson at the same age Tyson quit againsts McBride

longevity is surely a major factor in fighters ratings

Well, Tyson was never on the floor as much as Holmes.
