I'm not sure how much stock we can put in Ring rankings, interestingly Holyfield was ranked no2 by them as soon as he announced his decision to move up (before he even had a HW win)

    Michael Spinks, Champion

    1.Mike Tyson
    2.Evander Holyfield
    3.Tony Tucker
    4.Tim Witherspoon
    5.Pinklon Thomas
    6.Carl Williams
    7.Trevor Berbick
    8.Adilson Rodrigues
    9.Tyrell Biggs
    10.Mike Weaver

Exactly, its bull****. Tubbs was a ranked contender. The Ring ratings have always been a crock of ****.

Tubbs was arguably unbeaten with a claim over the WBA belt he lost controversally at the time of the fight with wins over Page and Smith. That makes him a top contender. He also went on to beat a Prime Norris and arguably beat Riddick Bowe (and even if you think Bowe won he put on a good performance and Bowe couldnt do what Tyson had years before)

Holmes was inactive and inactive fighters aren't ranked, if Ortiz beats Mayweather is it a poor win because Mayweather isn't in the ring WW top10 :patsch

a crock of **** would be any top ten that would include a 24-1 fighter (who was only 2-1 against elite fighters back in the day anyway) who in two years had only outpointed wimpy halstead, mike "frank bruno knocked me TFO" Jameson and a former fighter having his first fight in 3 years!!!!

whilst true that his last titlefight was a MD it was a lousy fight nobody cared who won and was going back two years. Witherspoon tested positive for smoking weed after the fight -and he won!! since then tubbs did nothing.

    beating eddie gonzales?

Yes he went on to be a useful veteran /gatekeeper fighter but before the Tyson fight Tony had already bombed at world class. David bey and buster douglas matched his win over page, and outpointing smith at that time wasnt any great shakes right after Holmes stopped him. Those were his only two wins that meant anything. Tubbs was without doubt had the weakest resume of any of the lost generation beltholders.

oh, so Tyson fought tubbs who was not ranked and Holmes who was not ranked. TWO UNRANKED FIGHTERS get a shot at Tyson both in the same year holyfeild and witherspoon were ranked? hmm.

You're right he should have fought someone who didn't have 1 HW fight instead of someone who many people thought should be the lineal HW champion, based on his last fight :nut And no doubt if he did beat a Holyfield with no HW fights, you'd say, he didn't have any HW fights its meaningless

You've descended to trolling because you got the year of your Ring ratings wrong

Tubbs had to be ranked to fight Tyson. The Ring is a magazine fool.

Those are the end of year '88 Ring rankings, looking back with hindsight from May '89... obviously Tubbs wasn't ranked after he got demolished by Tyson. I reckon he will have been ranked in March '88 before they fought. Does anyone have the Ring issue just prior to their fight? Besides i bet he was ranked by the top alphabet orgs. Tubbs only had only razor-close MD loss to Spoon.
