Watching the Commonwealth boxing this week, trhe commentators mentioned that the boxing that we have always referred to as amateur boxing will from now on be referred to as "olympic style boxing" So, there will be no more Amateur World Boxing Championships, they will simply be referred to as The World Boxing Championships. I assume this the segue into the new pro league, and the WSB has already muddied the water.
I don't know why the word amateur is so looked down upon. I actually prefer amateur boxing over pro's generally. Kinda like College basketball or football vs the pros. I think amateur boxing has a much better ring that olympic style boxing.
Why can't they just leave things alone? Anyway, I'll no doubt keep referring to the amateurs as 'the amateurs' regardless of any changes to the name.
It was called Olympic Style Boxing for the last decade or so  Since about a year it's called AIBA Open Boxing (AOB). Then there's WSB and APB.
Doesnt really make sense they are still amateur boxers, doesnt matter wethere wearing headgear, how they score the fights etc. They can call it what they want it's amateur boxing!
But they're not amateur anymore, thats the point. They're setting up a pro league and most of the top guys fight in the WSB which is a pay per fight competition. They've been amateur in name only for quite a while, and now the AIBA are just phasing the word out.
Phasing it out for those top guys. For the average joe doing a bit and having 8-10 fights in his lifetime, he is still an amateur boxer. Or is he an "Olympic style boxer"?
I think all competitive amateur boxing will be referred to as "olympic style"... Dont think it means you have to be an Olym[pic level boxer, its the actual style(3 rounds, IBA rules) that make it olympic style.
Competetive amateur boxing has been called OSB for about a decade (if not longer) now.. Since about a year it's called AOB. http://www.aiba.org/default.aspx?pId=183#
