Must boxers aspire to be professionals anyways and the headgear in the amateurs makes no difference. Boxers are well taken care by the referees where one good hit will get you a standing eight and probably have the fight stopped. Is not like in the pros where a lot of times you have to be almost dead for the fight to be stopped. That's where the danger is in the pros not the amateurs. And amateur boxers getting paid is a great idea, too many boxers that have no chance of being professional champions will get a chance to make a career and get paid in the amateurs, ie me lol.

Yep, the red shiny 'war' cap in your avatar . Anyway on topic, i personally just want to do amateur for the sake of doing as i don't enjoy and don't mainly train 'amateur style' boxing.. I find that Boxing is far more complex than just giving a slap to the guys face is equal to a KD (obviously the KD will leave a stronger effect but theory wise is equal to a regular touch). The idea that they took off the headguards is great, amateur will be more exciting this way since reflexes is a critical element and now for both attacking and defending scenes

Think the Headgear thing came about in the 70s. Boxing was getting bad press at the time, So the powers that be introduced Headgear, to move away from the same Rules as the Pros. They tried to make it look safer, but as a few Posters here realize, it causes more rotation, with added weight above the Neck. I think its a good idea to scrap them.

Uh you're also taking punches with a headguard on.
And there are different scientific articles as to whether it reduces or actually enhances brain damage;)

Headgear is supposed to protect you, but it makes defense much harder. Can't see **** when dodging or trying to coverup :!:

resurrecting an old one here. just read in ring magazine that they're looking into allowing pros to compete in the 2016 olympics. i can handle the loss of headgear and switching back to real judging, but what are your thoughts on the olympics having pros compete in it? my opinion is, theres two ways to look at it: a fans perspective, and a fighters. as a fan, how unreal would it be to see the best pros fighting in a tournament? it would generate alot of interest. but from a fighters perspective i feel its taking away the limelight and the chance to shine for alot of young aspiring guys. they work for years to get to olympic glory, whereas if pros were competing countries would be more inclined to pick them to represent the country then some 18yearold kid waiting to make his impression. not only that, it gives us a chance to see who the next great kids are coming up. anyways, this is something i hope doesnt go thru, but it is in talks and AIBA is trying to get a 2013 pro tournament organized. so it could be reality. i hope this wasnt already discussed in a thread

the way they plan on working it, you'd have to have turned pro under the AIBA's pro circuit. That's why they're nixing headgear. It goes with their world series of boxing, they're amateurs fighting under quasi-pro conditions. The idea is you fight under AIBA sanctions and tournaments but if you turn pro and stay in their group, you're still covered to fight in the Olympics since they control those fights too.

This would be terrible news especially for aspiring Olympians, not the first I've heard of it though. Who watches that whole WSB shite? Probably AIBA looking for money in their pockets.

probably. it'd be a way to consolidate pro boxing under one group. So then you have to question if it's worth it to let them run it all or to keep the system as is with the promoters and sanctioning bodies
