Wanted to make this thread for a very long time so I can tell you all how it is here but never had the time.

Now in office, and have few mintues to kill so here I go.

Here in India, as you all know, Pro boxing is not that famous. However, Amature boxing is.

Training here is a lot different - I'm saying this because I have been in this forum for a much longer time and have read many thread to know how training is in US/UK, atleast.

    Here,

    1. We step into the ring only when we have a bout.
    2. Practices is done outdoors
    3. My training is actually on the roads, my club I mean. The road is inside the local football stadium.
    4. We hardly use the heavy bags. Only one in my gym. Weekly once, max
    5. We ONLY USE 12 OUCE gloves.
    6. Headgears, only when we step inside the ring for bouts. That is also gone now.
    7. People will laugh at you and do not take you seriously if you wear anything bigger than a 12 ouce gloves. Literally laugh at your face.
    8. Same goes for headgears. Damn, even mouthgaurds during sparring will make you a joke.
    9. Sparring is everyday, post traning.
    10. You cannot switch gyms, atleast not in the same locale, as, when you do so, trainers get to know that you are from a different gym and they never entertain that. You can join only as a beginner to a gym, unless you switch house to a differnt city.

Play some youtube videos, should be interesting for you guys. You can get to know the Indian style of Boxing. :good

That's very unique. Sounds like a very disciplined thing there. Which has its benefits... But the idea of doing anything without a mouthguard, to me...just sounds insane. I can't even imagine risking brain injuries and chipped/broken teeth, especially sparring with smaller gloves...how common is that?

Sparring is everyday. On the weekends, there will be cross gym sparring which are actually wars. Guys for the kill. I usually opt out of it and try and avoid those sessions.

You see, people's mind set is different here. There don't care about a missing tooth or a scar.

You can categorize broadly into 3.

The first category, the major one, high school pass outs, generally poor, not enough money to join college, got no job, using Boxing as a sport, try and win a medal atleast either State level or District level, use it to get a Government job and hang up the gloves. For them, Boxing, or any other sport they opt is merely a pathway for a decent government job. They dont care about mouthgaurd or Olympics or a missing tooth. They want to settle in life.

The second category, me and the likes of me. Educated, working, Boxing as a hobby/interest.

Third, those fat rich kids who wants to cut weight. Their parents fund the gym.

Coaches are like kings here. No manager concepts. Switching gym is impossible. And thats how it is in here.

I know what you are getting into. But its not about population. Its more of the culture.

Here, no coach says not to wear a mouth guard or headgear. Its the culture. Thats how everyone is. Thats how it is. You wear a headgear and you would be the odd man out, and ofcourse being mocked at.

You dont like to be bullied in a boxing gym, do you? I mean, this is not a dance class right. This is a boxing gym.

you can try to bully me..i wouldn't bother, if you are mocking me for wearing a mouth guard only one who is odd here is you..

ok, if i`m sparring with somebody who doesnt have a mouth guard i would remove it also but then sparring would be light. if we do it 100 % **** it, i have life behind that gym door, and i wont ruin it because of some stupid bravado acts.

if its a culture then i wouldnt be part of it, also if you are so tough where are the pros? even in amateur boxing there is no too much good boxers from india.. they are probably worn out from all that damage they take. :!:

Boxing gyms have respect where I'm from. No bullying.

Why risk injuries that will affect real bouts?

:D Guys.. why are you all getting so pumped up. I just thought to tell you all how it is here..

Its easy to say than to do.

Honestly, probabily you wouldn't mind it if thats how it is since your day one.. :good You all understand what I'm saying?

Again, its not about toughness or population or whatever it is .. thats how it is here.. so relax :) as simple as that..

Pros, as far as I know, in the early 80's itself there is a ban for conducting Pro fights.. Before 80's I guess the sport wasn't populare enough here.. Pros aren't popular here.. Nobody conducts prizefights here.. No promotion.. NO followers.. Hell, most aren't even aware who Floyd is, in my gym..

its ok, i was maybe too reactive, sorry about that :) but it looks like you are approving training that way..

if you know for better ways why dont you do something and bring the indian boxing to higher level, f.e. open the boxing gym where boxers must use mouth guard
