Hi again! I was reading up on amateur boxing and found this article. http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2007/05/070502093035.htm
It talks about the potential for damage to the brain after more than 15 hits to the head during a fight. :patsch I read a thread here about a guy who wanted to fight but his dad used the brain damage argument and some of the posters argued against that. What is anyone's take here on potential brain damage in amateur boxing? Thanks!

My higher than average intelligence prevents me from interacting with normal people, so I took up boxing to negate the difference. So far it's not working :)

I had a car accident about a year ago, had severe brain damage. Should'nt be walking, yet boxing, spar a couple times a week, have a fight in about a month and just submitted a 6 page college paper which probablity wise I will probably get a B on. God spoils me...

"The study found high CSF levels of neuronal and glial markers suggestive of brain damage after a fight. A particular marker for neuronal damage, neurofilament light (NFL), was four times higher in boxers within 10 days of the fight as compared with healthy non-athletes. These increased levels returned to normal after three months rest from boxing."

So...your getting brain damaged all the time anyways although its only 1/4 the amount. The training also IMPROVES the efficiency of the nervous system so your nervous system could POSSIBLY get better, especially if you didnt fight just trained and sparred. So why the hell wouldn't you box? you have fun, get fit (pfft @ non athletes j/k) and learn a skill that could save you some trouble down the road.

Boxing is bad for the brain? pshh no way. Besides the occassional lapse in concentration, black spots where i should have my left perepheral sight and uncontrollable twitch in my left arm, I've experienced no negative side effects. :D Gives you a good excuse ofr bad spellling

boxing does cause brain damage to some people yes but it is a small minority especially now with new safety precautions and rules.

the only effect i get is i lose my short term memory after a fight and forget where i put things but that goes away pretty soon but come to think of it where did i park my car and where do i live again. just kidding
