The featherweight from Ukraine scored 11 straight between Round 2 and 3 over the Russian defending world champ, taking the lead 13-5 after the third round. So what does he do the last round? Get on his bike and run around for the last 2 minutes.

Great upset, but because of the system, he knew he could run and make it a less than entertaining fight.

    Thoughts?

Amateur boxing isn't about entertainment. If it was supposed to be entertaining they'd pay us for it.

If the Russian couldn't react to the change in tactics and pin down his man, then that's his own fault.

If in the professional fight you know you lead with a few rounds you would probably run as well for the whole last round to secure your win against oponent who knows that he must knock you out to win.

Kolya, I'll give you that, that entertainment shouldn't factor.

But do you like this system better than the old one? I liked the 3-round, 3-minute system that didn't involve the "white part of the glove."

He should medal, he got a good draw and the world champion, Albert Selimov, is out already.

We're switching back to 3x3 in January, after the games; and I like the current scoring system in terms of the criteria for it. It's been based on the white portion of the glove landing for a long time, since the 70's at least.

    Count back??

I think they go through a count how many times each judge presses the button and add them all up.
Because 3 out of the 5 judges need to press the buzzer within a second of each other for a punch to score, there would be many times where an apparent scoring punch does not register.

    Is that right?

This is a hell of a war between the Australian and the Frenchman. How do you think Williams will fare against each style (Australian = southpaw boxer, Frenchman = orthodox pressure fighter)???

Also, I wouldn't mind the current system as much, but I think Standing 8s or KDs should count for at least 3 points. Otherwise, guys who are ahead by a lot could just take knees in the late seconds of a fight, especially if they are hurt or are on the verge of getting KOed.
