Amateur World Championships/Olympic Qualifying thread

So the World Championships begin on September 22nd in Azerbaijan. Hopefully there will be some sort of online or red button coverage provided by the BBC, or a stream somewhere. The championships double as an olympic qualifer, and boxer that makes it to the quater finals will qualify for the 2012 Olympic Games in London.

What happens if two boxers from same county qualify- e.g. if Cardle and Saunders both qualify or even Cardle, Saunders and Evans?

McCracken said last night on the BBC London show that in the event of boxers qualifying at the same weight there would be box-offs back in Britain.
In 1996 David Burke and Scott Harrisoon had to box off at the European championships in Denmark after both qualifying for the Atlanta Games.

If they both get through to the quarter finals then its McCrackens choice as to who goes. He will probably have a box off to decide fairest way possible.

 

is there anyone beign considered for light heavy. any possibilty of Smith or Ogogo moving up or someone coming down??

*So who are people's "ones to watch"

My personal ones are:

Charlie Edwards - looks an exciting prospect only young will only be his 2nd major international tournament. Just being introduced into the GB setup could rapidly improving. Could potentially have an Amir Khan on our hands in terms of rapid rise to prominence.

Khalid Yafai - Experienced former Olympian high hopes for him in major tournaments recently but has been unable to deliver due to bad draws or injurt lets hope he pulls something out here.

Tom Stalker - Team Captain has won medals twice silver at Euros and Commonwealth Gold most consistent performer for team GB look froward to see if he can bring that form to the worlds.

Anthony Joshua - Again like Edwards he only recently has made his way into international contention and as a heavy is being brought along slowly but now could be his time to shine. Highly touted depending on his development in the next 10 months could be a medal prospect.

 

Jovan Young of Jamacia at 81kg he also boxes for Fitzroy Lodge hes one to look out for

 

Campbell seems to be the top guy. Has a bad patch in 2010 but has picked it up again.

Have heard plenty of good things about Martin Ward. Ogogo is maybe a dark horse. We have to remember James DeGale was possibly the least fancied medal prospect going into the games in 2008.

 

I don't rate Ogogo at all if im being honest. He is being pushed in all the olympic adverts and gets a lot of media but personally doesnt seem anything special from what ive seen. Would like him to prove me wrong though :good

Selkirk is a very good fighter plus it was in the final round of a fight Ogogo was winning by a long way, over 3 years ago when Ogogo was 19 and Selkirk was 23.

 

What about Obed Mbwakongo, the Light Heavyweight? I went to school with the lad, and I remember David Haye saying he would be the next big thing when England fought the USA in an amateur tourney a few years ago as he also won a couple of ABAs. He was on course for an Olympic place then, but I no he lost to a Scot in the Commonwealth Games. Anyone know anything about it?

But I think he is getting a lot of hype because he is a good looking articulate lad. I feel that people want him to do well rather than he is expected to if that makes sense :think

But as I mentioned would love him to prove me wrong.
