I have a friend who has potential to be a pretty good boxer. He was fighting out of this one gym and in his first and only fight scored a first round KO. But the gym closed and the closest gym isnt close enough for him to get routine workouts in. Is it possible to take part in Amatuer boxing shows even if your not "backed by" or "fighting from" a certain gym? in other words could I enter him into shows independently? How would I go about doing that?
Yes. Go to the USA Boxing Website. They have instructions on how to declare yourself as an independent boxer.
