http://www.espnstar.com/other-sports/news/detail/item703851/Boxing:-Mitchell-eyes-Burns-clash/ What is your opinion of AAA? Can the 33 year old make any noise as a light welterweight? We'll set the bar at European champion...
Wouldn't be adverse to seeing him fight Lee McAllister for the Commonwealth title. Just don't want to see any more 6-8 rounders or WBA something or others.
:thumbsup He seems to get inordinate stick hereabouts. Can anyone shed some light on exactly what he said that was so egregious? So far all anyone has said is that he came off a bit cocky, but how is that any different from DeGale, Brook, and countless others British boxers? It isn't as though he's without any taste of success beyond UK level in his career. Anyway, I think being disliked (whatever the reason) has a great deal to do with people writing him off. There could well be something to the claims of having been dead at 130 and then 135 as he's started to get on. We shall have to see. Remember, though - this is someone who at one time was inked to face Joan Guzman back when the Dominican's hype and mystique were at their absolute apex and was unlucky not to get that opportunity to prove himself as world class or not. It wasn't even considered a great mismatch, more of a highly anticipated cross-Atlantic summit where the visitor was a favorite but not an overwhelming one. Opinion was fairly split if memory serves, with the majority going with Guzman and some smelling a domination in the air but a good number who fancied the upset. Nobody who was given a good chance against Guzman back then can be accused of speaking too far out of turn in calling themselves a possible spanner on the world scene (given a proper comfortable weight) - right?
'At his best' being the operative words. I don't think we've seen anything like his 'best' since he beat Gulyakevich and Burns so the chances of him returning to that form 5 years later +10lbs in weight seem remote. And well...losing to Nigel Wright didn't inspire optimism.
I'm not sure but if Dunky hates him he simply must be an absolute ***** In the Brit forum Guzman/AAA was considered a gross mismatch, only Dunky and a few others were backing Alex.
At his best he was a very good fighter he lost all steam he had after Guzman messed him about. Never managed to get himself going after that moving up and down a few times think he has also chopped and changed his trainers as well not 100% sure on that. Either way does seem like he has it in him to get back to the top domestically never mind to where he was in his prime.
Is it really so bad to have been nicked by Wright? Surely you all don't need a Yank to tell you that Wright's a bit better than his record? He's been on a good run and could really tie a bow on it against Theophane. He also gave McCloskey a hard night's work.
