I disagree. He looks better because he is shown here against a far lower calibre of fighter. The training footage for both Tunney fights (particularly that shot in California and Colorado, of which there is quite a lot) shows him to look in great shape, fast, and powerful as well, until he starts boxing Loughran who makes him look abysmal. Dempsey's problem was, and it was like this throughout his career, that he needed the right opponent to look like a killer against.

but we aren't putting much emphasis here on his technical prowess but more his athletic nature (speed of feet and hand etc) so the opponent doesn't come into play that much.

if we were saying "look how he negates the jab" etc that would be different.

Yes but your ability to show speed, power, etc. can be emphasised or negated by your competition. Shane Mosley was blazing fast even late in his career but looked decidedly pedestrian when he fought someone like Forrest who could negate those natural qualities with technical ability.

Track down the early training footage of Dempsey-Tunney 1, when Dempsey before Dempsey had made his way east and youll suddenly start thinking "Gee, Dempsey looks pretty damn good here and in fantastic shape" But then struggles and looks clueless against a classy guy like Tunney. People always have excuses for him.

In 1920 we have training footage of him prior to Miske and prior to Brennan and in that footage he looks like a superman, then against Brennan he doesnt look a whole lot better than he did against Tunney. Was he slowing down in 1920? Hardly. He simply needs lumbering, C level fighters like Willard, and Firpo, or overmatched and/or smaller fighters like Miske and Carpentier to look like hes special. Against the Brennans, Gibbons, and Tunneys of the sport he looked normal because he was actually fighting good fighters.

Even Roy Jones could look of normal athleticism when matched with a skilled fighter: Hopkins, Tarver, Harding, Griffin and so on.

Not sure about this ... he did beat Brennen far easier earlier and all reports were that he played a bit too much in NYC before the Brennan fight ... overconfident ... that being said I always have felt that Dempsey needed better training to go with his natural speed and power ... he never learned how to cut off a ring ... you see it aganst Gibbons and of course Tunney ...

One knows this shows dempsey to be strong fast and skilled...how does one know this...well for one...by watching it of course..but also the fact that Pachilles doesn't even really try to argue any weak points skill wise. He just trolls by saying "why didn't he fight that black fighter" and then by trying to mess with Burt.

So its good to see that Pachilles is impressed as well.

at the other end of the scale, has anyone seen this comeback fight by dempsey?

hard to tell which fights class as exhibition or not but the record doesn't quite tally up.
