I think Hopkins turned down the fight only because it was a part of some multifight package with little incentove for him to sign. Not like he was ducking Calzaghe, who was also fighting at a different weight, if memory serves.
which fighter did calzaghe beat who was in his prime that makes you think he could beat the greatest fighter of his era?
Who was ottke to go to America and face at smw? He had beaten Mitchell, brewer etc Eubank had fought in America Sturm put his title on the line against De la Hoya in America Abraham. I notice you say mw as if that was his whole career, but try to bury that as a small smw fought Dirrell and ward in America. Calzaghe fought in America Michalczewski was champ, so why would he travel to America? This is Aussie invader ruined in a debate yet again lol
eubank had his first 5 pro fights in the US and then fought exclusively outside the US from the age of 22, and in his own words : "fighting roy jones would've been suicide". sturm was a paper champ who cashed in for the oscar fight because oscar wanted a belt to take to the hopkins fight. sturm then took the first plane back to germany and was never seen in the US again. i mentioned abraham exclusively at MW because it wasn't until he entered the SMW tourney (props to him for that) that he started to face quality opposition consistently. as you know, calzaghe only fought in the US once jones and hopkins were dethroned, past prime and losing as many as they were winning. no surprise there. michaelewski wasn't the champ, he was a belt holder. nothing more. a recurring theme with the fighters you try to defend is that they predominantly fought between MW and LHW, avoided the US like the plague when jones and hopkins were kings, and have the honour of never fighting either jones or hopkins in their prime. so this is where you try to blame the fighters fighting on the biggest stage of all for not fighting who weren't. good luck. EDIT : regarding ottke at SMW and your comment "who would he face at SMW...in america?" considering ottke was a belt holder, as was calzaghe, and they lived an hour away by plane but never fought each other and retired 'undefeated', it really makes a mockery of the term 'undefeated', doesn't it? ottke, like calzaghe, had the best fighters in the world a division above and below them, and did nothing about it. nobody said that fight did or didn't have to take place at SMW, but they weren't interested anyway.
