1. Increased comp, mainly from East Europe (the former Soviet block); 2. What happened to white Ams has happened to black Ams. They got much softer, that is they lost their "eye of the tiger". Re black Ams who disproportionately made up the top heavier wt class fighters from 50s to date - massive welfare programs, "affirmative" action (set asides) in hiring, and a growing middle class. If you're black, athletic, and 160-200++ lbs you're most likely not going into boxing. Not these days. And few whites will. Even the established Hispanics aren't producing many boxers, it's more from the recent arrivals. For some reason ppl find reason #2 "disturbing" or get upset over it. It's just a social economic factor and has little to nothing to do w/ race, national origin, religion, etc.
they were always more popular, and soccer is the most popular sport in almost every country in the world apart from america where its not that big so that factor is non existant
i dont really get the socio economic argument Ireland has been more wealthy since 2000 than its ever been and were producing a lot more talented boxers than ever before i think its the increased competition, america almost had 160 upwards to themselves before 1995 now there finding the incresed competition hard to deal with
There was an NBA & NFL full of big athletic men in the 60s 70s 80s... maybe the "real" HW champs were in those leagues in the past too atsch FFS then Marciano, Liston, Ali, Holmes, Tyson, etc etc were all "frauds" :-( Seriously it's a very lame argument... one used due to the group that is dominating the HW scene currently.
joejr, did you see what I have as #1 I don't know about Ireland, but I know the US :yep and I think #2 is a factor.
maybe to you it is. but it is pretty much a fact. all the best atheletes in america are in basketball and football
Why did you just mention those two sports?* There are many big athletic men in the NHL and MLB. In fact the current area producing most of the top HWs also contributes top athletes to the NHL :yep * As if I don't know why
ass they have always been ali, frazier, foreman, tyson, homles wouldnt have made it in the nba or nfl they were fighters
America is declining in the boxing world, The majority of top prospects are coming from elsewhere especially Eastern Europe. What people have to realize is that it was easier for America to dominate in the past, Boxers from the Soviet block couldn't turn over, Cubans still can't turn pro without defecting which wasn't easy to do it's far easier now. America has declined but the reality is what has happend is Eastern European fighters are just allowed turn pro now, look at the higher weights in boxing nearly all dominated by Eastern Europeans. Best HW Klitschko CW Huck German but still Europe LHW certainly a strong case for Kovaelv if he beats Bhop no disputing it. MW GGG Even look at some of the lower weights. FW Gradovich, Lomochenko SBW Rigondeaux. America is declining but the main reason they have less champions and top fighters is because more fighters can go pro now.
The other main reason is wealth, not as many poor people in America now, Boxing has always been dominate by poor people, in the 20s and 30s it was the jews, Irish, Blacks, Italians who dominated, The jews, Italians, Irish then become better off so stopped producing fighters for the most part. The same has happen with Black people in America, Not to many kids growing up like Liston, Tyson, Ali in this day and age. The Eastern Europeans like Klitschko and GGG come from very hard places it's no surprise Eastern Europe produces the fighters they do.
Ali didnt grow up poor tbh but your right also the great amatuer set up in european countries and Cuba and asia means that even with wealth these countries will continue to produce talent
