I agree with The Unstoppable in that being a small country and having a small talent pool we Brits tend to pin our hopes on any prospect that comes along. (However you have to admit that for SUCH a small country, the amount of talent we produce is quite remarkable!) I do find it quite weird that if you look at "Experts" picks for fights, the Americans tend to unanimously pick their guy while the Brits tend to give a more balanced view. See some of the picks for Froch vs Taylor. One US sports columnist actually picks how Taylor will beat Froch and in what round having admitted only two lines earlier having never seen Froch fight before. I do feel SOME Americans have an insular view on fighters outside the US. This is most likely down to the fact European (or wherever) fighters are rarely showcased on American TV. ???????
I agree, we do alright for a nation of 60 million, being compared with a nation of over 300 million. But P4P, per capita, whatever you want to describe it as, PR shits all over the UK.
As an American, Froch will be the first British fighter I can think of that I will be cheering for. Sure, hes not the greatest of all time but the fact that he keeps calling Calzaghe out and telling it like it is about Calzaghes career helps me cheer for him. Whether Pavlik beat Hopkins or not Joe Calzaghe should have fought Pavlik anyway instead of running to retirement. It is situations like that which encourage my questioning of the British boxers. Fight the best even if you have to go to Mars to do it and dont wait until theyre collecting social security to do it. I love the Mexican fighters because of their toughness and obviously their style but they fight any one at any time and any where. When a Mexican fighter is talked about being the best I dont have as many questions to ask because for the most part these guys have fought the best instead of just talking about it. They do not duck a fight.
My thoughts are that this thread gets done about 20 times per day. Stop caring so much what Americans opinions are on boxers. **** 'em, it's not like we expect US fighters to travel 3000 miles everytime they fight.
+1 More importantly, Broxi, if your avatar is what news anchors look like in Scotland, I'm moving to Edinburgh.
Well lets see the brits are paying huge money to watch fighters like Khan which totally destroys oportunities for up and comers not widely known.Who is Khan? What has he done to even get considered for a tittle belt against Koltelnik? Same goes for Haye, what has he done to get a tittle shot against Wlad and Vitali? Hatton though is a solid contender whom I respect not because of his boxing skills but of his raw talent but the rest are overhyped by the the brits insanely.
:huh Hatton is a P4P Top Ten. He's the Ring/Linear champ at 140, and has won world titles at two weights. "Solid Contender" Haye is the former crusierweight champion, stepping up to heavyweight. You think he is less deserving of a title shot that Hasim Rahman? or an anicent Evander Holyfield?
So u r one of those who thinks Hatton is P4P #1 if he beats Pac huh? Ok my bad hes solid and im actually rooting for him to win agaisnt Pac, but I cant simply jump on the other badwagons.
I have seen alot of casual fight fans refuse to give foreign fighters the credit they deserve. I have even seen british fans look down on american fighters. It happens all the time in many sports, but a true boxing fan / analyst will never look down on a fighter because of his / her nationality. It will happen all the time in this world, probably forever, only thing you can do is ignore it because its not worth paying any attention to.
STFU whiney ***git. you think you're the first to start such a brilliantly insightful post along these lines? we have to put up with this sort of garbage on a weekly basis, take it elsewhere.
