America will hate it if Calzaghe retires 46-0

There is wayyyyyy too much prejudicial garbage going on in these forums...

If an American doesn't think Calzaghe is the best fighter in the game, they are "anti-all things not American".

Can't there just be a disagreement?

I'm not some super-patriotic moron who fights for a guy because of the colors of the flag he's waving. I don't think Americans can fight, and others cannot.

I was a big fan of Lennox Lewis, but guess what? Lennox Lewis fought EVERYONE.

Americans tend to want to see big fights. They want to see legend vs legend, atg vs atg, hofer vs hofer...

I've said this many times, and I will say it again... Calzaghe spent from 1997-2006 in relative obscurity, defending a garbage WBO belt, not seeking out the BIG fights. And if they were big fights, they were only big in a small portion of Europe. That's not being ANTI-EUROPE. It's just a fact. There were no markets for those fights in America, because Calzaghe never made it a point to fight outside of his backyard, and/or seek out the big names.

I have no problem with Calzaghe. I think he's overrated by many of his fans, but I don't hate the guy.

The point is, people think that because he fights Bernard Hopkins at 43 or Roy Jones as a shell of his former self, that it counts as fighting "legends".

Americans want to see great fighters against great fighters at their peaks (or at least marginally close to it).

I mean Rocky Marciano beat Joe Louis, but I don't really count that other than as a name on a resume. Lennox Lewis beat Mike Tyson, but he didn't beat the REAL Tyson. He beat a shell of the man. Tyson didn't beat the real Larry Holmes, even though Holmes showed the ability to dominate a young Ray Mercer after that fight.

It's stuff like that. You may not like that Hopkins beat Trinidad at 160lbs, but Trinidad was pretty good at that weight, and he was still a near prime Trinidad. That's a difference.

I don't care if Calzaghe retires 55-0... when he was in his prime, who did he fight? What HOFer did he fight? What ATG did he fight? Who did he meet in their prime?

The reason a lot of people in America don't like Calzaghe, isn't because he's undefeated or not American...

IT'S BECAUSE HE SPENT HIS PRIME FIGHTING PEOPLE NO ONE HEARD OF, FRINGE CONTENDERS, ETC.

    That cannot be disputed.

His kids will be English citizens, but they will have no English bloodlines unless their mother has English bloodlines.

Powerful how? you couldn't help your own people in New Orleans, we're doing all the work in Afghan and Iraq, you have higher crime, more national debt, you have to beg money from China soon, you have 50 million ppl living in poverty, no health care of note, dreadful education, incredibly high pollution, and for your size, you fail to accomplish much... when we had an empire, we excelled at everything...oh but you don't have an empire.

I dispute it, for the reasons in other threads I have been involved on, and you claiming Hopkins was past it is in my favour anyway.

The very reason he was British is why no one would fight him, they wouldn't get paid enough, so blame your own TV networks for holding Joe back.

Casual fans in America are not very familiar with Calzaghe. This site is not filled with casual fans. Unless you live in America, you are not going to be able to determine the knowledge of the casual fan.

    Um....no...you obviously missed the point...

There was a difference between fighting RJJ 10 years ago or now.
    Same thing with Hopkins.

Calzaghe fought legends, but they weren't anywhere near their peaks when he fought them.

Hopkins wasn't a bullying holder at his peak. RJJ didn't go 3-3 in his last 6 fights at his peak.

C'mon man. They're nowhere near what they were...

I agree with you, there not as good as they were(although bhop did a pretty good impression on sat), but that dosnt mean there not legends, and remember joe is only 2 years younger than RJJ

I'm British but I think it says it all about Calzaghe only getting PPV fights at the end of his career. He is a decent fighter but most of his fights a garbage. He has good feet and skill but he punches like a *****. Real boxing heads that know Calzaghe is a tad overrated on these shores. Figting Roy Jones now after he has been Knocked out cold by Johnson and Tarver! The funny thing is he still wont be able to KO Jones. Calzaghe just peppers little slaps out and moves.Gota even rate Benn above him due to the fact he went to America from earky in his career to beat top fighters like Dewitt and Barkley. Calzaghe nutthuggers jar me.
