American Boxing needs another Kelly Pavlik.

Midwestern only please.

 

You would think that with vast areas of the country devastated by recession and poverty (factors which historically are closely linked to success in boxing) that USA would now be a veritable production line of top class boxers.

Why isnt it happening?

 

Maybe one that can stick around longer than two years and follow through with his potentional instead of drinking himself half to death and punching out windows with his bare first.

Pavlik/Taylor I is a modern classic. The Miranda, Zertuche, McKart, and Martinez fights were also very entertaining.

 

The other factor is access to quality coaching. Instead of having someone in their neighborhood that's got excellent coaching skills, guys have to travel to find them- not easy if you're broke.

There's quality coaches out there, and there's quality raw talent, but more work than ever needs to be done to get the two parties together if that talent's not coming from a traditional powerhouse boxing region.

 

Great thread & absolutely agree. I really enjoyed watching Kelly Pavlik rise to the top of the Middlewt. division. I was in AC @ the fight when he KO Taylor! So what if he was somewhat one dimensional, with his 1-2, 1-2. He had a terrific 1-2 combination that put people on ***** st.

Simply terrible what happened to him. Hope he's doing OK. Anyone hear anything about him lately?
