In an attempt to reassure the Saakashvili government that the Obama Administration will continue to publicly criticize Russia for its role in the brief 2008 Russo-Georgian War, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton lashed Russia for its “invasion” and “continued occupation” of Georgia.

Of course there is no real mystery surrounding the war at this point, as the European Union has issued reports in excruciating detail of the early hours, in which Georgian troops attacked the South Ossetian city of Tshkinvali and Russia responded by destroying much of Georgia’s military.

But in the wake of the war the redrawn borders, or rather the lack of official recognition for borders which had for all intents and purposes been redrawn years prior, remains a sore point. Two breakaway republics, South Ossetia and Abkhazia, had been trying to secede from Georgia for years, and Russia formally recognized this secession in the wake of the August 2008 war. The US has refused to acknowledge the new nations, though they had both been de facto independent for years prior to the war.
And it is these two republics that remain at issue, and are the source of Clinton’s claim of “occupation.” Georgian President Saakashvili had promised to use “any means necessary” to reconquer the two enclaves, and with the US pumping military aid into the Georgian government one of the first acts of the newly elected Republics was to ask Russia to sign defense pacts, which they promptly did.

The deals cemented a Russian military presence in both enclaves for the long term, but also provided both republics with a means of survival against a near term threat of invasion. Clinton’s condemnation is in keeping with the US policy not to recognize the new nations’ rights, though in the long run it appears Georgia has no chance of re-obtaining them through military means, and the policy will only serve to be a sore spot in future relations.

Good post. Westerners will vehemently deny any similarities between Georgia and Kosovo. Pointless argument.

The war was an American ploy.Unfortunately it was election related.

McCain's top foreign policy adviser,Randy Scheunemann, was a lobbyist for the Georgian government.Saakashvili is American educated and knows American government elite.

Whatever happened behind closed doors happened. Then a country the size of West Virginia attacked Russia. And got spanked.Which was the only possible outcome.

This was all for McCain, who had a hero card and needed to use it.He came weak as hell, saying,"we are all Georgians now".The people saw through it all and it didn't help McCain. When it didn't help McCain,it wasn't long before the "war" was surrendered.(Saakashvili was funny as hell on CNN all those times.)

Russia wins in the long run.South Ossetia and Abkhazia aren't just breakaway regions, they are ethnic Russians in those regions and want to be a part of Russia, they will be one day.

As far as Clinton making statements, just politics,it means very little. We are undoubtedly more tied to Russia than Georgia. Those things she said to Russia didn't mean anything to Russia,it was just a way for the "U.S. government" to officially say to Georgia,"Thanx for whatcha did.Lick your wounds now.We still gotcha back from a distance".

    It's all truly disgusting.

South Ossetia is in Georgia, right? So technically it's true.

Anyway, I don't know who's fault it is, and I don't really care much. Frankly, I don't understand why the US is so vehemently against self-determination here. Seems like we're only in favor of the will of the people when it suits our political interests.

The one I almost find even more interesting is Transdneister, in Moldova. Basically been operating as a separate country for a decade now, yet the entire world is in a state of denial that it even exists.

Kind of, yea. My ship went to Georgia my first deployment. Bit of a shithole but the people are nice. Saakashvilli or however you spell his name came on my ship for a reception. Kinda cool.

The main issue here is the Cold War might be over, but we're still trying to show Russia we still matter. We were trying to get Georgia into NATO but the biggest thing stalling that is we don't want to **** off Russia. Good thing we were dragging our feet on getting them in. Could have caused us to give the Reds a stern talking to. NATO is pretty irrelevant if the whole point of it is moot now that the Cold War is over. Or...is it?!

Regardless. I'm surprised this hasn't been moved yet.
