What is the deal with this, The hate is just amazing, everybody seems to lining up to take a shot at Boxing, I just don't get it, boxing has not changed in 20 years with TV coverage with HBO and Showtime doing the big fights and littler networks ESPN,Versus,Fox and other spainish networks doing cards, It has not changed, IS the TV ratings still good?, All I read is dana White putting **** on the sport. when nearly all there fights are on PPV and there is very few good fighter out there. boxing has hundreds. What has gone so wrong in the last year to warrent all this negative media.
I think Dana is dissing boxing to make MMA, and the UFC in particular, look better and to promote it. Pathetic actually, that he has to downgrade boxing to make the UFC look better. F*ck Dana. Oh well, Fedor screwed him biiiiiiiiiiiiiig time:rofl. There was a pretty good article on the front page here a few days ago. Check it out.
I dont think Dana hasnt said anything that isnt true. However as long as promoters keep putting on fights people wanna see then boxing will just be fine, boxing needs fights like Pac - Hatton, Cotto - Pac, Mosley - Margo, Super Six tourney as long as this trend continues boxing will be just fine. I would prefer it if we had one exciting heavyweight champion rather than two boring ones...
To be honest with you I have a little nephew who is 12 and although he can watch boxing and he can understand it he prefers to watch MMA and the UFC stuff and its mainly probably because of the whole something new thing. People are slowly moving away from boxing because of all the politics and bull**** that goes on and big fights that should be happening not happening. People are slowly loosing interest and the something new factor is taking over. Kids are more into the whole MMA thing than the boxing thing. The only kids that will have more of an appreciation for boxing is the kids that have elders who kind of force it upon them from an early age. Boxing is not really catchy like MMA is to most of the youtes. Especially if they switch on a boxing match only for something like last saturday to happen. It was a dreadful let down. People goto a boxing match to see a fight break out. They can tolerate boxing for a few rounds but they want to see someones head being taken off and thats why MMA brings more buzz and excitement. Only the big boxing fights can completely upstage MMA but if big fights are a big flop then it kicks boxing in the nuts. With everything going on around you the casual boxing fan hasn't got time to debate about the sport like we do, they just want to watch a fight break out and see a good fight so as long as boxing continues to do things like the super 6 tournament and show us the fights on TV all over the world then it will help boxing bigtime. We need boxing back on free channels to ever be able to be a big sport like how it used to be in the times of Ali and Tyson. Now everything is PPV and most are letdowns with crappy undercards that send you to sleep before the main event even comes on.
Every time I turn on UFC I see two frat boy Limp Bizkit fans with died blue or pink mohawks humping each other on the ground. UFC is garbage.
but it is going the same way as boxing, it has started already with fedor, It will be just like boxing in 5 to 10 years with all different promoters and TV companies having to do deals, UFC will have to change, When White is making more money than the fighters, the **** will hit the fan, it is combat sport, it is the nature of the beast
:rofl I dont understand how anyone could find UFC more exciting. The first 3 rounds of the Bradley - Campbell fight had more action then any UFC card on Spike i've ever seen.
I was watching some MMA match last night and this guy was throwing jabs at his opponent who had to be standing about 10 feet away from him while the other guy was doing some girly leg kicks that of course would not connect from such a distance, it was utterly pathetic. And of course the fight ended with one of the guys being choked out by the crippler cross face or whatever stupid name they call it. How do people find this crap entertaining?
I hear what your saying but I really cant see that happening but if it does then it will probably start to be the demise of UFC. I like to watch the big UFC fights but Im not going to sit down and watch Billy Joe from Texas fight lol. I can appreciate the skill level involved in MMA but boxing is number 1 to me and you cant beat a good boxing match. I dont think I can see Dana White allowing UFC to go down the same road as boxing with promoters etc. Fedor did the right thing because UFC dont treat their fighters right in my opinion, the way they did Randy Couture was dreadful
UFC is just a fad right now. '98-'02 it was all about the WWF. People were more interested in watching Stone Cold and the Rock. It was so popular back then . . . . . but look at it now, people could care less about it.... Because now everyone is into UFC. UFC just uses stupid marketing tools to pick up douche bag fans, for example.... they got half naked girls dancing around outside the cage.....They have phony "beefs" between the fighters....They have UFC reality shows on MTV.... They have fighters with gimmicks (i saw one MMA fighter who comes to the ring in a ****** mask and does interviews in a ****** voice). This **** is no different then professional wrestling other then the "fighting" isn't staged out.
True but you said it yourself there and it does work lol, there is stupid people who find it entertaining and whether its me or someone else somebody will watch it just for the entertainment factor. Boxing is just Boxing, what you see is what you get. You cant really glamorise it, maybe you could put some more hot chicks on set conducting interviews and show the ring girls inbetween the rounds more but apart from that its pretty much no frills for boxing.
But this is where the difference is between the fans of the two sports. Boxing fans watch boxing because they enjoying seeing the display of skill and technique and ring intelligence between two men. UFC fans watch it because they are douche bag frat boys who want to see someone getting ****ed up. They want to see Brock Lesner beat the living crap out of some guy half one third his size or see Kimbo Slice KO some guy they got from the McDonalds across the street from the arena. It's annoying how people like Dana White are claiming people who watch boxing are switching over to UFC. Thats a bunch of crap, UFC is not stealing any boxing fans, they have their own fan base who 90% of them have never watched a boxing match in their lives. Boxing dosent need phony beefs or naked girls dancing because they don't have a fan base fool of morons like UFC does.
The thread starter is correct, there is something really strange with the amount of boxing bashing in the mainstream media. Prior to 2007 boxing had very little coverage (outside of Tyson & DLH) but with the rise of the UFC and boxing putting some better competitive match ups it led to a backlash from the media. Its like they just woke up from a coma, realized that big boxing matches were taking place and automatically assumed and ran with the story that boxing is dying/this is the last super fight ever because the UFC was growing at the same time. I remember a few months ago they had a panel of sports writers on ESPN talking about boxing possibly making a comeback (with the hype of Pac-Hatton) and they just destroyed the sport, going so far as to say that boxers should give up their sport and train MMA. I don't think that any other sports gets trashed like boxing, sure it has its problems but similar problems that the UFC and MMA in general has gets completely white washed by the media. The Showtime tournament and HBO putting on a strong fall lineup on non-PPV will get very little coverage while the UFC putting on constant PPV cards (including two this month) gets no criticism for charging their fans for 12+ PPVs a year. The UFC is the new exciting thing, so I can understand the attention, but it seems impossible for the mainstream media to cover it without trashing boxing (which they never even bother to watch). This is bad because it turns off possible new casual fans, ask the random sports fan on the street and they will tell you right away that boxing is not the same anymore/its dying, even though they have not watched more then 1-2 shows in the past 5 years. Also, the UFC is just really good at marketing itself and I would not rule out them indirectly working together with certain media members like Yahoo sports which also distributes their online PPVs, its outright propaganda.
i respect both sports.. you gotta ease up a little bit medicine. i bet you havent seen much of UFC/MMA for you to make those kind of conclusions. boxing fan as you have said in your post, watch boxing to see skill and technique. that just the same with MMA fans who watch it to see their bjj, muai-thai, boxing, karate, judo skills. IMO you've got to see fighters like cotoure, GSP, silva, machida, penn, silva, etc. on an MMA match so you can see how technical the sport is. Brock and Kimbo are just newbies to the sport so you've got to give them some slack if their only skills as of now are limited. btw, MMA also has weight divisions. it's just that brock is a heavyweight and HW doesn have weight limit so it's not his fault that he can carry his body easily to beat up opponents.
