yeah. Traditionally it has been a stop over point for the better fighters. It has since gained some prestige and we should see some guys start to make their bones there.

I always believed Lucas was Canadian :patsch.
It seems with what you are saying, is that America lost interest in the SMW division when Europe started dominating the division and only current promotion has created an interest

Maybe Ward but only because he is a big SMW and was a LHW amateur. I dont think Dirrell will as I dont think he would be able to compete at the higher weight

I looked on Boxrec and it said Lucas was Canadian, why would you include him in America?

In all fairness, SM is smack bang between the second (middle) and maybe third (LH) most prestigious divisions in boxing history. It's, what, about 25-30 years old? Most people, especially Americans will simply regard it as a stepping stone from Middle to LH. It's well documented that Hopkins turned down a chance to fight Calzaghe for his WBO title back in 2002. But in saying that, could you really blame the undisputed middleweight champion to move up in weight to fight a unheard of title holder (and WBO trinket at that, which is only now starting to garner respect) and risk his chance of getting Jones in the ring for a rematch?

Yes, and they were most likely on their way to lhw. SMW wasnt really a hot spot.

I had heard it was a bout with DLH he was aiming at.

Maybe he had a possible major money fight with DLH in his sights from post Trinidad. But I think what he really wanted then was a Jones rematch, which should have happened in 2002.That's where a possible fight with Calzaghe could of happened in place of Jones. But Calzaghe was a mere title holder that had no real financial clout or name value. If say, Calzaghe had beaten Ottke in 2001 and therefore held the undisputed SM championship, then that would be a major incentive for Hopkins to move up. But you can hardly blame Hopkins for choosing to stay at middle and continue his own title run to get a big money figh with the cash cow at the time.

Hopkins wasnt trying to get a Jones rematch, when he was MW champ. Hopkins found every way not to fight Jones along with Calzaghe.
You are wrong also because Hopkins was considering going up to SMW to fight B Mitchell for his WBA SMW title but for whatever reason that didnt happen.
The division is young, but Americans didnt care about how young the CW division was, when Holyfield was beating alot of former LHWs.
Funny how when there was no marquee American names it was a stepping stone division, but now a couple of American olympic medallists are in the division, it is now a glamour division .
It was a glamour division when Jones and Toney were at SMW and they were there for a while, so hardly a stepping stone

:patsch Wrong again. Hopkins was offered big money to fight Calzaghe. A career high payday of 3 mil, but fought for less than 1 mil against fighters like Hakkar, so please dont say silly things like no financial clout

The Central European branch of Team Elite are still working around the clock trying desperately hard to educate the ignorant. Team Elites European branch has been making great waves in the subject, so much so that an article titled "The not so super......Middleweight" was put out as one of ESBs front page. Obviously Team Elites work has got the attention of some, forcing that article to be wrote.
The article Failed to understand that G Johnson wasnt even recognised as a player at SMW years ago, but now after one win over A Green is a top 10 SMW :-(, and the division is markerted better but NOT stronger.

Team Elite, helping to educate the ignorant
