Watched the fight last night, Khan looked impressive against an opponent who didnt offer anything. After all, thats why they made the fight, to make Khan look good, after last nights fight, GB wanted you to forget all about the devastating defeats, Khan was built up last night to be straight back in contention and like none of that stuff ever happened. I rate Virgil Hunter very highly and I said the other day, if he cant change under Virgil, he never will. OK its not gonna all happen over night, but we have to see some signs! Did Khan do anything last night so new or different? Apart from punching in bursts and moving more and maybe bringing his inactive hand up to his chin when finishing an attack, Khan was simply doing things we have already seen him do but maybe thinking a little more....but was he thinking enough? I can see Virgil trying to keep Khan simple, getting to think more in the heat of a moment. Trying to calm Khan down. He understands a fighter works at their best, when they are calm. Another thing I noticed was that Virgil is really giving Khan advice at every single second, this was unusual for Virgil, but at the same time, Khan needs this treatment. This simply isn't Andre Ward, never will be, and Virgil knows it, so he is taking a different approach. But one thing we still dont know, is what happens when he takes a stiff shot on the chin, how does Amir react? This is when we will see the real change, has he changed? Or does he revert back to type? We didnt get to see much of any inside game improvement, apart from a couple of seconds when Khan had his back to the to the ropes, and threw a few good uppercuts. He was still circling around a lot with predictable movement, although at times it clicked that he shouldnt do it anymore, and he moved in another way. But for me, the glaring thing I noticed was that he is still leaving his chin out high and he is still has lots of habits, I dont think he will ever sort out, simply because, that IS Khan and how he fights, even Virgil wont be able to totally convert Khan. He looks great against opponents who dont do much to him, Judah, Malignaggi, Molina, but is vulnerable against fighters who know how he works, Garcia, Peterson, Prescott. Thats what make the fights so good to watch, even if he does get laid out. :good I'll definitely be watching the next fight with eagle eyes switched on, I would suspect another teaser fight before locking horns with Garcia again. If we dont see more significant improvement in the next fight, I can see Garcia finishing Khan again. (I reckon Garcia will KO Judah, Khan will have one more fight to look good, and then we will get the Garcia fight in the early summer of next year, one fight I would love to see is Khan-Brook, Khans speed and punch rate vs Brooks accuracy and timing) Thoughts?
Thoughts! Yeah just one, why did you not post this in one of the umpteen other threads already running on the subject?
I honestly saw nothing to over analyse in the fight as far as improvements or even changes. It was as it looked on paper, a comeback fight against a made to order opponent. Khan did what he would have done at any stage of his career, certainly since relocating to America, against such an opponent. Remember, he put on a similar performance against Malignaggi just a little messier due to Malignaggi being more awkward, that was apparently signs of his improvements, just because he managed to keep no power/physicality guys under leash. That isn't where you're going to find out if he's improved. I'm absolutely certain Virgil Hunter himself won't be taking too much from this. He'll be more concerned with what he's been seeing in the gym. He'll have known this was nothing more than a confidence builder. The moment you're going to see whether Khan has really implemented any changes is when he steps in the ring with a Garcia or Matthyse.
Yup. Khan did what was expected, nothing more nothing less. A confidence builder WAS needed. As was one or two fight camps with Virgil to allow him some time to try and make some changes. Can't criticize Khan for his performance at all, as it was as required. But the acid test is yet to come. PS for what its worth, I think he still took a few unnecessary shots against Molina.
Khan showed absolutely no change whatsoever. The Sky spin job was disgusting. He still struggles to stay in position, still throws too many punches and takes silly ones in return, he still drops his hands, chin goes up, his right hand always pulls away from his cheek when he jabs and most importantly he has absolutely no sense of range or timing whatsoever.
