    News:
    -----------------------------

BOXER Amir Khan kick-started Bolton's battle against the bulge by unveilling a new gym in the town centre.
The Olympic silver medallist has invested £700,000 of his own cash into the venture in a bid to tackle an increase in child obesity and a decline in physical activity.
His not-for-profit Gloves Gym, in Prince Street, should be open within two months.

The 20-year-old, who lives in Heaton, said: "Boxing training is the best exercise for fitness and keeping weight down.
"It's going to be a great incentive for children to come down and motivate each other with the weights, boxing training, circuit training and strength conditioning."
For just 50p, youngsters aged between seven and 21 can spend two hours at the gym, using equipment under the watchful eye of six coaches, or simply learning from Amir's technique as he trains.
Amir said: "Having a big gym like this at such a young age means a lot to me. It's massive. It's the only gym of its kind and it's all for the kids."
The former Smithills High School pupil has pledged to spend at least 20 weeks a year training at Gloves Gym in a bid to inspire the youngsters.
"It's my way of giving something back to the community," he said.
The gym will boast two boxing rings, punchbag and skipping areas, a viewing gallery to watch Amir in action, a sauna, merchandise store and more.
Asif Vali, Amir's business manager and chairman of Gloves Gym, said: "This is a great project for any children wanting to get involved in boxing.
"Having the opportunity to watch and train with Amir will get them thinking about sport as something you need to do."
More than 20 people have been working around the clock to complete the gym for its August 10 deadline.
Builder Pat Gallagher, whose firm is constructing the gym, said: "We are confident that we will make our deadline which is eight weeks away.
"In terms of the construction we haven't had any major problems except a leaking roof."
Alex Purdie, principal of Kia Motors' Bolton showroom, which donated £15,000 to the gym, said: "We are quite anxious to be associated with what Amir is doing for the children in the community."
Businesses interested in sponsoring Gloves Gym should call Lucy Scott on 01625 527188.

£700,000 is a fair old amount given the current economic climate.

lets get something straight, Khan is not doing this out of kindness or looking to do folks a favour, it's an investment made from ill-gotten capital. The guy is a punk, we know that by now.

I think Khan opened this gym just to get some free and easy sparring partners.

What a load of shite!!!! This is purely a tax evasion scheme. How the **** has he put 700k of his own money into it, it aint even that big, has it got rings made from gold for ****s sake. I also saw it on the box that it takes 400k a year to keep it going, ****IN NO WAY DOES IT COST THAT. **** every business in the area would go under with business rates, and running costs like that. ****, I run two gyms and it aint even a fraction of that for them added together. Pure Scam in my opinion. Tosser, trying to make it look as if he's taking care of the community, when he's trying to hide the pennies:nono

Its not his money, its money he managed to swindle the boxing world out of. As far as Im concerned £700K is nothing for what he has been so generously handed over the last few years. This makes him look generous to Joe public but he shouldn't have the money in the first place, not even a tenth of it.

Regardless of where the money come from, would it be better he bought some shops and laundered it that way?

At the end of the day its another gym that people can use

Tell me what other fighter in the UK is doing the same? even the fighters with the most money arnt quick to spend on new gym's, no they rather buy a new Bentley or some ****

Just because you hate Amir the boxer does not mean he is not a good person

50p for 2hrs gym session - you cant fault it - getting kids off the street and doing something physical is what this country needs...kids have **** all these days thanks to the government building house's on football pitches and knocking youth clubs down......fair play i say.

did he buy the land and have the gym purpose-built?

if he did, and it is in the centre of bolton then i'd of thought the set up cost would be well over 700k.

Yep no matter how much I dislike the kid I can not fault him for this project. Everything about it seems great but I fear for the amount of money the thing costs.

Another Khan camp spin story. £400K a year running costs my arse, do they employ some hotshot trainer ? I bet they are getting grants to the tune of £400Kpa for running costs. No doubt some of the £700K setup probably included matched funding from government/lottery sources. But as usual with the Amir b/s camp they will spin everything.

Iron Bull (or is it tahir) please give the truth on this instead of the spin story.
