The Mexican-American, who won 10 world titles in six weight divisions, is understood byThe Daily Telegraph to have wanted to represent the young British fighterwhom he believes "can become a superstar in the sport". He will accompany him on a press tour in the UK late next week.

Khan's US debut, a defence of the World Boxing Association light-welterweight title, will take place in the 5,000-seat theatre at Madison Square Garden against Malignaggi, defeated by Ricky Hatton in Las Vegas in 2008.

It will be televised by Home Box Office in the US, and is likely to be shown on Sky Box Office in the UK.

Richard Schaefer, chief executive of Golden Boy Promotions, said: "We have concluded a deal to fight Paulie Malignaggi. There is already a tremendous demand for tickets, and we anticipate that it will be a sell-out."

Khan, who split suddenly with promoter Frank Warren earlier this year after five years together, has come under fire for not facing mandatory challenger Marcos Maidana, a heavy-hitting Argentinian, who is mandatory challenger for the WBA 140lb (light-welterweight) belt.

"We were thrilled for Amir that he signed with us. But those criticising him should hold off," said Schaefer.

"He insisted he wanted to come to the US and fight the big names. For him to start his career in New York, at Madison Square Garden, against an accomplished fighter, is exactly what he wanted.

"He is really serious about taking on all-comers in this division and possibly at 147lb [welterweight] in the next few years, and wants to challenge himself."

Elsewhere, Ricky Hatton will bring his first promotional event to London when Anthony Small defends the British and Commonwealth light middleweight titles against Sam Webb in Dagenham on March 26.
Hatton has been talking with Golden Boy matchmaker Robert Diaz about possible opponents, and is believed to be looking at a warm-up opponent in August or September before a possible fight with Mexican legend Juan Manuel Márquez late this year.

    AK's Twitter:

"CONFIRMED NEWS!... Amir Khan's US Debut Fight will 100% be against Paulie Malignaggi on May 15TH at Madison Square Gardens, New York! An explosive under-card is currently being put together by Golden Boy Promotions! (More Information will follow soon)"

Undercard sounds good. Finally a good ****ing card.

    Amir Khan Vs Paulie Malignaggi
    Victor Ortiz Vs Nate Campbell
    Jacobs Vs Manfredo Jr
With another good fight which apparently could be better than the Main event

Man, I am really looking foreward to this match up.

You have to give Khan his props for ignoring the WBA mandatory and fighting the opponent that everyone wants to see, Paulie Malgnaggi.

    Yeah.

Well, that just goes to show you the type of competitor that Khan is that he is willing to possibly lose his WBA World Title to put up the best match possible (Paulie).
