Amir Khan will take out his seven months of agony on Garcia

Danny Garcia should beware the wrath of Khan.

Because when he steps into the ring with the former double light welterweight champion next month, he’ll be taking on a storm that has been brewing for seven months.

Amir Khan must be ready to burst after the most frustrating period of his career. As if defeat to Lamont Peterson last December and all the controversy that surrounded it wasn’t enough – when he finally gets the chance to avenge that stinging loss, he gets the rug pulled out from under him.

Khan will be feeling a lot of hurt right now.

Just think about the various issues he has had to deal with since he was last in the ring. The pain of losing his WBA and IBF titles; the controversy over the ‘man in the hat’ and his anger at the performance of referee Joe Cooper.

The efforts he went to as he tried to ensure a rematch with Peterson and then the disappointment of that fight being cancelled after his opponent tested positive for a banned substance. Who wouldn’t be affected by that? Disruption Boxers are finely tuned athletes. They work so hard to ensure they reach their peak when it’s time to step into the ring, so apart from anything else, he has had to cope with that disruption to his schedule. Add to that the emotions he will have gone through watching the Peterson situation unfold and it is not hard to understand why he will be bursting to let out that frustration when he faces Garcia.

I am expecting to see Khan produce something explosive in Las Vegas. Not only to make up for the all the pain of the past seven months – but also to make a statement before moving up to welterweight. It wasn’t long ago that we were talking about him becoming a pound-for-pound champion and challenging Floyd Mayweather Jr. Peterson threw a spanner in the works and has continued to ever since his victory in Washington.

Now is Khan’s chance to put all of that behind him. His chance to win a third world title at welterweight to resume his hopes of becoming Britain’s first ever pound-for-pound No 1. While that target remains a dream for the Bolton fighter, the current No 1 returns to the ring on Saturday night. Manny Pacquiao faces Timothy Bradley after his contentious points win against Juan Manuel Marquez.

I expect another difficult night for the Pacman against a man Khan was so desperate to fight at light welterweight. Should Bradley become the first man to beat Pacquiao since Erik Morales in 2005 then it would set up a potential blockbuster against Khan later down the line.
