And at McCloskeys weight so was Patrizio Oliva! Look at a couple of the most recent European light-welterweight champions, most of them holding the title in their prime. Souleymane M'baye, Gianluca Branco, Oktay Urkal and Junior Witter who beat Andrey Kotelnik in one of his defences. Not bad company now is it!
This is precisely what I'm talking about how the Mccloskey fans are deluding themselves to the reality of this fight. Souleymane M'baye, Gianluca Branco, Oktay Urkal... all Euro level boxers, NOT world class and I wouldn't favour Mccloskey against any of them. Mccloskey is a good British level fighter, who has managed to get himself the Euro belt. Khan by TKO round 1
McCloskey's a highly-skilled fighter. He'll be a stern test for Khan, and he'll make it an interesting 12-round affair. Will Khan look good in dealing with a tricky style? And does McCloskey, despite being talented and skilled, have enough to hang with the elite of 140? I hope Khan and Roach don't underestimate him.
Come on, B4E. Paul's not that much of a sitting duck that he'll be blown out of the water by an Amir Khan who still makes mistakes and is not the finished article.
For me, Mccloskeys talents are rendered irrelevant by his defensive lapses and his speed. I just don't see him lasting 3 minutes without Khan getting through, completely overwhelming him and it being waved off Yeah I agree that Khan isn't the finished article, but it's his offensive skills that will end this early. He's not going to need worry about his flaws
big call! brave but still After your contributions to this thread, your either going to be pretty smug or else your grasp of boxing is going to be shown up and make you look very silly! I dont think McCloskey is the type of fighter to get blown away. He will counter punch and if Khan is going to take him out it will be on his feet with a flurry in the latter rounds Lol at ESB - Khan go's from being a total fraud hype job glass jawed bum - to Mayweather / pac like p4p fighter after, wait for it - blowing out a **** can in Salita, stopping Malinaggi on his feet who looked like **** and surviving barely (in a brave performance mind) in a fight where had he been the non promotional big shot, would have been stopped
You mean former WBA champion Souleymane M'baye isnt world level! Interesting. So, the European champion isnt Euro level and a world champion isnt world level. I am really struggling with your logic here. McCloskey fans arent "deluding themselves" - Khan is 1/10 favourite, everyone acknowledges he is favourite. They are supporting their fighter and consider that the 1/10 odds are too harsh, just like I believe your (borderline troll-like) assessment of McCloskey is too harsh as well.
The logic is simple. IMO, Just because M'Baye won the WBA belt, doesn't mean he's world class. I look at who he's fought, how he fought and how he got the belt. Despite a reasonable showing against Alexander I think the same of Kotelnik, he's just a very good Euro level boxer. Mccloskey to me is a very good domestic level fighter who would struggle against decent euro level opposition, such as M'Baye I'm not a Khan fan by no means, If you look at my post history you'll note I'm more often than not critical of people proposing the idea that he'll go further than he has already. However, despite Khan's issues, one thing that isn't disputed is his speed. I personally cannot see how Mccloskey is going to be able to deal with it, I think the moment he makes a defensive lapse he's going to overwhelmed and it waved off, that's why I predict a round 1 TKO.
Kotelnik is definitely world class. Beat Alexander on a lot of people's cards and beat Maidana. Pushed Witter very close as well.
The one thing I've noticed in McCloskey is how open he is for the 1-2. I honestly believe, nut-hugging aside, that Khan currently has the fastest 1-2 combination in the world. McCloskey's chin will come to test, BIG time!
Interesting that Roach doesn't rate McCloskey, I would have expected him to be confident of a Khan win but I thought he would have come out with the "Paul is a good Euro level fighter blah blah blah" mantra. It's an old cliché - but I think Khan's camp are seriously underestimating McCloskey and that can only work in his favour. All this talk of fighting Bradley and unifying the division before the end of the year is very distracting. Khan should just focus on getting past McCloskey in my opinion. I think this is a great time for McCloskey to fight Khan, Khan is being talked up and mentioned in the same category as Mayweather and Pacman, its at times like this that guys can be vulnerable and you might catch them. It's still a massive up hill struggle but I'm quite confident of a McCloskey win - to the point that I'm going to have a decent bet on him when I get over to Manchester. I'd have a bet here but I reckon McCloskeys odds in an English bookies are going to be crazy
I honestly, seriously doubt that. That's one thing Freddie Roach never does. Don't count on it, really. Roach actually gave a perfect summary of McCloskey in his post. The only Lethal thing he has is a very good right hook.
I don't see how people saying Khan is going to demolish Mccloskey somehow insinuates that they are saying he's suddenly the next Pac or Mayweather. The only people you are going to hear talking up Mccloskeys chances are the media and the promoters, as it's in their interest for people to think he has one.
